Overview

The Baroque suite was a collection of dances. And while Bach's four orchestral suites probably weren't intended for actual dancing, their tuneful, toe-tapping qualities are difficult to resist. Every suite opens with an "overture" in two parts, a majestic introduction followed by a frolicking fugal conclusion. Then come the dances: stately minuets, sprightly gavottes, sweet sarabandes, and spirited gigues. Each suite has a slightly different configuration. The Second Suite is like an elaborate flute concerto, closing with a brilliant "badinerie." The Third Suite has the famous "Air on the G-string," where the violins play a glorious, slow melody, all bowed on their lowest and richest-sounding string. Recorded in 1970, Marriner's performances still sound fresh today. His interpretations are expressive yet unsentimental, and the dance movements are an infectious spring in their step. All four suites are fit onto one disc -- a terrific bargain.
