Overview

As with so many younger pianists, Piotr Anderszewski's Bach seems inspired by the quirky brilliance of Glenn Gould. Anderszewski's interpretations have a distinctly Gould-like agility, clarity, and lack of sentimentality, yet they also have a delicate sensibility that is very individual. Also distinctive is Anderszewski's shaping of the long line, so that even the opening Fantasia of the A Minor Partita, with its short, breathy phrases, is drawn in large, structural arcs. With sharply pointed rhythms, the faster movements dance with impish grace, and the slower ones are still quite light on their feet. And when greater intensity is called for, the sound becomes more chiseled, not more weighty. This is invigorating Bach, then, the kind of playing that commands one's full attention -- and one cannot give higher praise than that.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - Bryce Morrison
At one level [Anderszewski's] playing is ruthlessly disciplined, at another bold and improvisatory; each performance is nothing if not vivid and compulsive.
