Overview

It's difficult to imagine a performer and a piece of music as closely associated as are Glenn Gould and Bach's Goldberg Variations. Gould's dazzling 1955 performance not only made the young pianist famous, it blew the cobwebs off music which had previously been regarded as a piece of musical esoterica. Gould showed that Bach's work was playful and profound; the wealth of contrapuntal detail and the labyrinthine structure are joyous expressions of Bach's compositional mastery. A quarter of a century later, Gould re-recorded the Goldberg Variations, one of the last projects he completed before his untimely death in 1982 at the age of 50. That later interpretation (also available from Sony) is more contemplative and restrained: The joy is quiet and private. Gould fans will want both versions, of course, but the intoxicating, rapturous 1955 recording is the one to get, if you're getting only one.
