Overview

The influence of Bach in Brazilian music may have begun with the Bachianas Brasileiras of Heitor Villa-Lobos, but they were not the end of the story. The art of the great guitarist Sergio Assad (and his brother Odair) was deeply rooted in Bachian counterpoint, and now, another generation carries the tradition forward. Sergio Assad is a major influence here, fully credited by guitarist Plinio Fernandes; he is present as an arranger of much of the music and as the composer of a full-of-surprises Preludio, Fuga, e Vivace that hits all the Baroque notes but keeps turning harmonic corners as it proceeds. Yet the young Fernandes, here on his sophomore release, is not a knock-off of Assad; a player of undeniable charisma, he has a livelier, lighter style, and he plays some newer pieces in Assad arrangements by Paulinho Nogueira and Mario Albanese. No recording location is given in the rather sparse booklet, but the work of producer Jonathan Allen is exemplary; he puts the listener up close to Fernandes' nimble fingers without drowning that listener in extraneous noise. In all, this is a hugely enjoyable album that helps build Fernandes as an emerging star of his instrument. ~ James Manheim
