Barnes & Noble - Marie Elsie St. Léger
With BACK AT ONE, Brian McKnight bolsters his sensitive-man image with sweet vocals on yearning ballads -- check "Stay" and the title track -- then playfully toys with his newly acquired hipness quotient on songs like "Play Yourself." As a producer, McKnight employs musical accents to great effect: Acoustic guitars evoke sultry Spanish nights on "Last Dance," a pedal-steel guitar makes "6, 8, 12" tug at the heartstrings, and synths and staccato drums bounce like one of Timbaland's hip-hop seducers on "Can You Read My Mind." The latter track begins with a choral interlude of McKnight voices, setting the tone for a thinly veiled call to love that is underscored ...

The latter track begins with a choral interlude of McKnight voices, setting the tone for a thinly veiled call to love that is underscored with acoustic guitars and a sly backbeat. More self-assured as a songwriter on this album, his fourth, McKnight distills his lyrics to convey deep, inexpressible emotion. And though he slips into sentimentality near the disc's end on "Cherish," nothing can sink this album -- or McKnight's soaring career.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Brian McKnight backs away ever so slightly from the streetwise rhythms Puff Daddy injected into Anytime with his fifth album, Back at One. That's not to say that the album doesn't sound contemporary or fresh -- quite the opposite. McKnight has figured out a way to make his gospel-flavored contemporary urban soul sound fresh, mainly by keeping the focus on the songs. There's nothing extraneous on Back at One: all 13 songs are given clean presentations, and he blesses them with impassioned performances. At times, the material itself is not particularly interesting, but most albums have filler; what counts is the good stuff, and there's enough of it on Back at One to make it another solid effort from McKnight.

    Best Album Ever!

I've always liked brian's music even as a guy. This album provides original and complex beats to match predictable yet soothing lyrics. The want to sing is overpowering. As a soon-to-be r&b/hip-hop artist i find this album inspiring and great for anyone. The lyrics maintain a balance between love (on ''Cherish''), sex (on ''Shall we begin''), and spirituality (on ''Home''). Great respect to brian and his talents. A must buy!

A man in touch with a woman's needs

Brian McKnights album ''Anytime'' is his most beautiful work. Everything from the words to the instrumentation is moving and brilliant. No artist has touched my soul in such a profound way. Keep making your music, Brian. You'll always have fans...Always

CAN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS

I ENJOYED THE WHOLE BRIAN MCKNIGHT C.D. I HAVE HIS BACK AT ONE C.D. AND IT IS HIS BEST ONE SO FAR. I THINK THAT THIS IS HIS BEST WORK BECAUSE HE HAS REALLY COME A LONG WAY SINCE HIS FIRST C.D. TITLED BRIAN MCKNIGHT, DON'T GET ME WRONG BECAUSE I ALSO LIKE HIS FIRST C.D., BUT HE HAS REALLY GROWN VOCALLY AND HIS LYRICS ARE GREAT. HIS MUSIC REALLY IS HEART FELT. HE IS MY FAVORITE MALE R&B SINGER AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST.

brian mcknight - back at one

this is an amazing album. the the music the great, the voice even better. it did not disappoint me. scarcely a day goes by that i don't listen to it. and the fact that the CD has a lot of sentimental value makes it a treasure to me.

Play this one for 2000 and beyond!

Brian has done it again!!! He ranks right up there with Peabo Bryson, Luther V, and Teddy P as far as sexy love ballads go. I have been a fan for years and will continue to be one -- ANYTIME......

An Arrow, headed Straight for your Heart!!! Familiarity of the Heart!!

When I first heard the synopsis of every prelude to all of the songs, I was taken aback. I thought, just like water when it gets to the cresting stage( simply lingers there), not knowing when the water will subside. The words, the connotations, melodic energy engulfed my spirit!!! Surely, I didn't want the moment to ever end. So therfore, one continues to be tranported by the Realness, sensualness, and truly the passion that the artist emits to his audience!!! Keep us mesmerized by serenading us with your Beautiful Musicical Vim!!! God Bless, Memorie Tober
