Overview

The organic, folk-inspired sounds of Caedmon's Call are as inviting as ever on Back Home, the seven-strong group's fifth studio project. Maintaining their trademark neo-hippie, Jesus-folk feel, Caedmon's Call stay remarkably contemporary, thanks to yet another amazing crop of songs that are beautifully and Intelligently self-produced. Light acoustic rock may accurately describe the Caedmon's Call sound, but it doesn't begin to do the band justice, especially on a collection as lively and diverse as this. From the sweetly inspirational "Walk with Me," which features the Shawn Colvin–like lead vocals of Danielle Young, to the jamming-on-the-porch feel of "Hand of the Potter," sung by Cliff Young, to the Middle Eastern instrumentation of "The Kingdom," what emerges is a mature group of musicians exploring a vast musical landscape. Lyrically, the material covers a variety of topics, ranging from songs of praise to some deep introspection on faith. The songs were all written either by band members or by a small group of longtime friends. There isn't a bad song in the mix, either, and each is different enough from the others to keep the material from running together, a problem on some of Caedmon's Call's earlier work. Back Home is a welcome return, and quite possibly Caedmon's Call's best work yet.

This is an album that I have been anticipating since I first heard about it several months ago on the Caedmon's Call site. This cd has not let me down. There is a passion that is present on all of the previous albums, yet the group continues to bring something new and fresh to each album they put out. The dynamics of this group is refreshing with Danielle, Cliff and Derek sharing the role of lead vocals on different songs. The lyrics show an uncompromising faith in God. These songs are not only musical entertainment, but at the same time serve as a ministry to those who truly listen to the words of the songs. I applaud Caedmon's Call on another fantastic album. This one's going to be in my stereo for a very long time!! I recommend it to anyone!
