These fun-filled chapter books mix school, monsters, and common kid problems with hilarious results. You'll scream with laughter!

Summer vacation is over and that means one thing--back to school. For Hubie, getting ready to go back is worse than actually going to class. His mom picks out all the wrong clothes, he gets back-to-back shots from his doctor, and there are rumors of a new teacher worse than any other. Will Hubie fail before school even starts?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
The last thing Hubie is looking forward to is the first day of school. Then again, the horrible anticipation and terrible preparation might be even worse than school itself. After briefly fantasizing about extending vacation and delaying school, Hubie reluctantly relinquishes his pipe dream and bravely faces back-to-school shopping. Things start to look up—literally—when Hubie falls in love with a snazzy pair of high jumper space-walker shoes (a steal at $255.00). Tragically, however, "money speaks louder than tears," and mom buys a pair of boring sensible shoes instead. Next, Hubie gets the usual school supplies, hears all about his friends' exciting adventures at chef camp and baseball camp, and has nightmares about scary classes and scarier teachers. One in a series of "Black Lagoon Adventures," this is a bit reminiscent of Dan Gutman's laugh-out-loud "My Weird School Daze" series...but Gutman's books were better. While this one has clever chapter titles and an occasional funny line, the story is very thin and the illustrations do the bulk of the work. Lee's black-and-white drawings are generous and lively, but—except for a random appearance of a T-Rex or a crocodile—there's nothing particularly novel about this novel. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
