Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
The first topic addressed—backpack safety—seems a bit out-of-the blue. Yes, it is good advice to "always wear both straps" and "choose a backpack that is the right size for you," but this reviewer wonders whether this really needs to be part of a parent/child discussion about safety. The rest of the book seems more relevant, covering topics like waiting safely for the school bus and riding properly, looking both ways before crossing the street, telling an adult "if someone is mean to you or another child," and listening "for instructions in case of a fire drill or an emergency." Early readers will be able to read this on their own and then discuss the contents with an adult. Full-color, full-page photographs show children in early elementary school. All of the children on the cover appear to be white, but those inside are from diverse backgrounds. From the "Rookie Read-About Safety" series. Reviewer: Sara Lorimer
