Overview

Although Angel loves her little brother, Rags, dearly, the constant responsibility of caring for him weighs heavily on her young shoulders. These tales of the trials and tribulations of ten-year-old Angel O'Leary are guaranteed to win many fans. A master at creating short, amusing episodes, Judy Delton writes about ordinary children in a manner often compared to Beverly Cleary, and Carolyn Haywood. Booklist described Angel as, "a flesh-and-blood child whom readers will take to their hearts. Each little jewel of a chapter is an episode unto itself, and Delton's handling of this format is reminiscent of Eleanor Estes' fine work."

In this book I think that Judy Delton meant to only write one single book, but realized that she was a wonderful writer and got going on the whole Angel series, which by the way are much better than her first book. In Backyard Angel, Angel and Rags seem so young and different. Their mom has not met their stepfather Rudy yet, and baby Thena has not been born yet, and the family had not moved to Greece yet. Alyce's apartment had not been burned don yet , and wasn't staying with the family. In the first book, Edna and Angel did not even know eachother! Overall, it was an ok book, but when you compare all the other Angel books to this one this one does not have a chance. But, if you have not yet read any of the other Angel books yet, this would be a good one to start with.
