Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A captivating secret in a charming story for the youngest of listeners. Hearers will be enticed to emulate the sound effects on each turn of the page as Backpack baby whispers to all that he encounters on a walk with his father. This could be a creative method to encourage children to be quiet, play a guessing game as they attempt to guess the secret or pass along a secret in a classroom or group setting. This could be used to engage children in the game once referred to as "Telephone" in which one person whispers a sentence in the ear of whoever is next to them one time, then the perceived sentence is passed to the next, and so on. Finally, the last person is allowed to speak the usually distorted translation of the original sentence! Children's imaginations will be stirred and they will enjoy guessing what the secret could be on each page. It truly is a surprise. Miriam Cohen's simple illustrations against a contrasting background prove to be a delight for young eyes without complicating the story. Ms. Cohen has written children's books for 33 years. This is further testimony to her productivity and respectable career. 1999, Star Bright Books, Ages 6 mo. to 2, $6.95. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young
