Overview

Carrying too much weight when backpacking can suck the enjoyment right out of a hiking trip. This short guide looks at all the common things backpackers carry one-by-one, with suggestions on how to reduce the weight of each item. It starts with the heavier gear, like backpacks, tents and sleeping bags, and covers more than fifty things you might have in your pack, right down to socks, soap, pencils and maps. In addition to a couple hundred specific suggestions, the introduction outlines six principles for finding new ways to reduce the weight in your backpack.

Though a few products are mentioned, this is not a guide to brand names and has no reviews of lightweight backpacking equipment. It shows you how to find or make the lightest equipment available at the moment, and how to reduce the weight of the gear you already own. There are even tips on how to cut the weight of the food and water you carry without taking unnecessary risks.

The "Backpacking Weight Reduction Guide" is a good companion to Gillman's "Ultralight Backpacking Secrets" (also available for Nook). If you really hope to carry less weight, and want specific examples of lighter options for just about anything that you'll take on the trail with you, this guide will help.
