Overview

Peter Marshall was the host for 17 years of the phenomenally successful celebrity game show, The Hollywood Squares. This is the inside story from why Peter took the job (he did not want Dan Rowan to get it) to the inner workings of the show (how did Paul Lynde come up with all those jokes?).
From stories about regulars Wally Cox, Rose Marie, Cliff Arquette as Charley
Weaver, Nannette Fabray, and Abby Dalton to stories about the guests - Betty
Grable, Helen Hayes, George C. Scott, Richard Burton, and everybody else who was anybody in Hollywood.

Hollywood Squares debuted in 1966 and became, along with The
Tonight Show
, one of the two shows to be on if you wanted to plug a new movie, show, or book. There are stories of friendships and romances that grew on the show, stories of what happened when the show taped in Puerto Vallarta,
Vancouver, and Jamaica. There are stories of The Hollywood Squares'
funniest moments and bloopers, including those that never got by the censors.

The book includes a CD of a long-out-of-print album, Zingers from The Hollywood Squares.

Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square is an insider's view of one of the most remarkable television shows of all time.

Play the enclosed CD; you almost shouldn't bother with the book!

I bought this book only so I could have the enclosed CD called "Zingers from the Hollywood Squares," and I wasn't disappointed. "Zingers" is VERY funny, even though some of the material is dated and a few of the jokes would today be considered at least a little sexist and/or racist. Most of it holds up OK though, and I will always be grateful to Peter Marshall for insisting that the CD be included with his book.
As for the book itself, it's mostly fluff. The first few chapters are almost pointless, and ramble too much. Peter keeps referring to people no one has ever heard of, and who seem only incidental. I wish he had devoted more time and space to the stars who made the show so funny. And I REALLY wish he had included more of those hysterical one-liners that made the show so much fun to watch!
All that having been said, however, you should still buy this book, especially if you can find one with the CD! The CD alone is worth whatever a seller wants to charge!

Whether X or O, everyone gets the square!

The laughs and tears flow profusely from this tome, proving that Peter Marshall is as good with the pen(with able assistance from Adrienne Armstrong) as he was with the quips during his "Hollywood Squares" tenure; it brings back so many great memories, when game shows seemed more human vis-a-vis the souped-up electronic sideshows of today. Paul Lynde was truly sui generis, there's never going to be another like him, and Rose Marie proved that the ladies could spin off a few good jokes of their own! Now that the Game Show Network has resurrected some of the classic episodes, a whole new generation gets to laugh along with Peter, Paul, et al.

Loved the show, loved the book

Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square brought back so many wonderful memories, the photos were great, especially the many color pix. I loved the stories about my favorite HS regulars like Paul Lynde, Charley Weaver and Wally Cox, but I really liked the way Peter rates the stars. His favorite, the sexiest, the funniest, etc. The CD has kept me laughing all the way to work. This book is a must read for game show fans, nostalgia fans, Peter Marshall fans and, of course, Hollywood Squares fans.
