Meet the Author

After receiving a degree in horticulture from UW Madison, Kim Flottum worked four years in the USDA Honey Bee Research Lab, studying pollination ecology. After that, he spent two years raising acres of fruits and vegetables, where bees played a large role. He brings this experience, plus nearly 20 years of writing and editing articles for beekeepers in the monthly magazine Bee Culture. He is the publisher of books on honey bee pests and diseases, marketing, queen production, beekeeping history, beginning beekeeping, and the classic industry reference, The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture.

    Great for the experienced beekeeper, but also good for the merely curious

    Mr. Flottum has a thorough knowledge base in this subject area, and has a very clear writing style. He also speckles his writing with humor, which adds to the pleasure of reading it! I've kept bees/harvested honey myself for several years, and found that this little book is an excellent reference. The photography is of excellent quality and aids greatly in clarifying points in the text, which would be a great benefit to a beginning beekeeper, or someone considering beekeeping as a hobby. I purchased a second copy as a gift for my brother, who is also thinking of trying beekeeping. At the very least, he'll know what beekeepers look for each time they visit a hive, and will have a great honey cookbook!

    The Backyard Beekeeper

    Being new to beekeeping, I found this book to be very helpful. Full of good pictures,easy to understand text and overall enjoyable to read.

    Good Book, Great Pictures, enjoyed reading

    Much of the information you find in this book you can find in others as well. I didn't really pick up anything I hadn't read before, but it was very helpful in re-enforcing topics that I am learning about. The pictures were helpful too.
