Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Part of the "Crabtree Connections" series, this title is categorized as an information book and it introduces a variety of critters that one could find in their backyard. Most bugs are not really pretty so the question posed early on "Aren't I pretty?" is probably a bit tongue in check. The creatures look pretty scary, especially since the images are often enlarged to show the details of their body structure. Lady bugs are certainly among the more familiar and they are pretty. Their bright red color and spots do warn predators that they do not taste good. Centipedes and spiders capture and eat prey, but there is no real detail about what spiders do—they usually inject a poison into the insect and suck its guts; perhaps the author felt that fact might be too gruesome. There is more information in this introduction to bugs and the photographs are well positioned with factoids presented in colored shapes on the spreads so that young readers will have some trivia to share with family and friends. For example, Grasshoppers have ears in their knees. An engaging early reader that also has a brief glossary, book and Internet references for additional information and an index.
