Overview

Bad Boys is a line up of some of the most unscrupulous, cynical, devious, roguish musical villains of the opera stage. Bryn Terfel calls them the "demonic misfits and malcontents of this wonderful music."

Internationally acclaimed star Bryn Terfel, a gentle man in real life, recruits a gang of "bad boy" characters from opera and musicals to electrify us with tunes from the sinister side of the bass clef.

Thoroughly convincing as villains you would not want to meet alone in the dark, Bryn Terfel wields a full, wide ranging bass-baritone ever in service to dramatic instincts rare in any era.

No singer morphs from Don Giovanni to "Mack the Knife" to Sweeney Todd with Terfel's devilish ease -- Bad Boys is a delightful box of mixed musical bonbons. Grammophone writes: "[Terfel's] powerful vocal presence is born of physical presence and he harnesses words, in any language, like few others." From the Label

Editorial Reviews

The Independent - Andy Gill
This anthology of great bad-guy roles, from Iago and Mephistopheles to Sweeney Todd and Mack The Knife, is custom-built to showcase his dark, brooding qualities.
The Guardian - Rian Evans
These cameo glimpses of roles for which he is acclaimed are tightly focused, every word perfectly articulated: Iago from Verdi's Otello, is cruelly calculating, Méphistophélès from Gounod's Faust is Satan personified, while, in the Te Deum from Puccini's Tosca, Terfel's Baron Scarpia, the corrupt chief of police, sounds gorgeous but is horribly menacing.

Loved it from start to finish. An eclectic choice of arias, from opera to Broadway, each one a delight to listen to.

Bryn Terfel is one of my favorites with his marvelous voice and delightful persona to match, but "Bad Boys" was much heavier than I expected. Other than two selections from "Les Miz" and "Porgy and Bess" all the rest are serious opera and therefore heavy stuff. I couldn't appreciate the latter because I didn't know the bad boys and their stories. Listening to Bryn is always wonderful, but not knowing who and what he was singing about lessened the total impact. Opera buffs will love this, but the best I could do was like it.
