Forensic geologists Cassie Oldfield and Walter Shaws embark on a perilous hunt--tracking a terrorist who has stolen radioactive material that is hotter than the desert in August. He threatens to release it in America's most fragile national park, Death Valley.

But first he must stop the geologists who are closing in.

As the hunt turns dangerous, Cassie and Walter will need grit along with their field skills to survive this case. For they are up against more than pure human malice. The unstable atom--in the hands of an unstable man--is governed by Murphy's Law. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

And it does.

Editorial Reviews

Wired.com GeekDad - Erik Wecks
Golden Bot Award: Best Indie Whodunnit
"A taut thriller which uses the environment of Death Valley with great aplomb and skill. Its close encounters with radiation will give the reader chills and it has the best closing act of any book I have read in years."
Good Book Alert - Katherine Hanna
"The mystery kept me guessing, the suspense made me sweat, and the pace was as blistering as the heat in Death Valley."
Big Al's Books & Pals - Big Al
"Well developed characters with a unique relationship and history that adds to the story... A real page turner."
Union of Concerned Scientists - David Lochbaum
“A very fine job of characterizing the disconnect between measures intended to assure safety and the reality of things sometimes being unsafe. Truly well-written and engaging."

Meet the Author

I'm a third-generation Californian who migrated from southern Cal to northern Cal. What I like most about my state is that one can go from the ocean to the mountains in one day, with a lunch stop in the desert. I like it so much I've set my forensic geology books in those settings.

OMG! I'll never drink water again.

When the FBI copters out Sierra Geoforensics, Cassie Oldfield and Walter Shaws, her mentor, aren't told where they're going. And no wonder: It's a murder scene, an attempted hijacking of highly radioactive waste in Death Valley. Worse yet, Cassie soon discovers the bungled hijack had predecessors. There's a lot of highly radioactive waste missing from the treatment plant. Smuggled out and replaced with talc. Where'd it go and why? And worse yet, this may have been an inside job. Who can Cassie and Walter trust?

Cassie soon suspects everyone in Nevada and California should be scared, for there may be plans to release this waste into the groundwater, where folks will suck its poisons for centuries. Think tap water, plants and animals; think glow-in-the-dark dead. Good name, "Death Valley," especially when the killer(s) target Cassie and Walter.

Badwater provides chills and thrills in abundance, will make its readers pause before a swim or pull of the tap. One of the most frightening books I've read. The star system doesn't go high enough for Toni Dwiggins' Badwater.

    Badwater -suspense

The plot was interesting and well-researched. However, the author has trouble with realistic dialog at times. She has one red-headed white scientist talking continually like Jar Jar Binks. That gets on your last nerve and stomps on it. On the good side, she does know how to write a good finish. Overall, not a bad read.
