Overview

The job of a high-risk courier is very simple.
You pick something up. You drop something off.
The hard part is not getting killed.

When Kyra, the daughter of Big Jake Rynerson -- one of the world's wealthiest men -- is kidnapped in the Galápagos Islands, professional courier Simon Leonidovich is hired to deliver the ransom. But playing bagman for a billionaire is not so simple -- not when so many people stand to gain by Kyra's disappearance, and not when someone close to Big Jake is playing for the wrong team. To complicate matters, Simon finds himself falling for Big Jake's enticing and clever assistant, Caitlin Wells, though she may be the very one scheming to control the Rynerson empire.
But when the money drop gets botched, the stakes turn deadly for both Simon and Kyra. From the dark jungles of Colombia to the flashy lights of Las Vegas, Simon matches wits against a cold-blooded adversary who seems to know his every move. Now he must somehow finish the job, save the girl, and figure out who's been pulling the strings before his pursuers deliver him into an unmarked grave.
With rapid-fire action and devious plot twists, Bagman is a lightning-paced thriller that will keep you breathless until the final drop is made.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The second book in MacLarty's thriller series featuring globetrotting, ask-no-questions delivery man Simon Leonidovich succeeds in all the areas that its predecessor didn't and establishes Simon as a character worth following. Fresh from his previous case, where he helped expose a diet pill that was about to cause a medical holocaust, Simon is approached by Big Jake Rynerson, a wealthy hotel magnate (think Donald Trump). Rynerson's daughter, an eco-activist, has just been kidnapped in South America, and he wants Simon to deliver the ransom. Simon is aided by a small staff of Rynerson's confidants, including a world-renowned expert on kidnap recovery. It doesn't take long for the crew to realize that the kidnappers have every intention of killing the daughter, money or not, and a simple delivery will no longer suffice. While the first book in the series, The Courier, was heavy on the chase and thin on the science driving it, this entry is well-rounded and compelling. It has all the elements of a great thriller-a chase, a vicious villain, a healthy dose of red herrings, and, most importantly, a likeable hero-and MacLarty balances these components expertly. Agent, Jane Dystel. (Aug.) Forecast: It will be a struggle for this title to make bestseller lists, despite print advertising in USA Today and Web marketing, given the crowding there, but MacLarty is well on his way to making a name for himself. I just finished Jay Maclarty's new book 'The Bagman'. It's the second book of Maclarty's I've read and I enjoyed both of them. However, I wouldn't start reading The Bagman unless you can sleep in the next day. I found myself still turning pages at 3am. Good thriller right to the end.

Though pregnant (and divorced), Dr. Kyra Rynerson-Saladino visits the Galapagos Island archipelago to honor her retiring mentor septuagenarian Elsworth Marshall. However, one of the donors Peruvian land owner Luis Acosto needs help for his four year old daughter who was bitten by a bushmaster snake. Elsworth gets Kyra, who flew her own plane here to take father and child to a hospital. En route, Luis abducts Kyra, daughter of the wealthy billionaire Big Jake.---- Though estranged from his daughter because of his leaving her mom years ago, Jake is desperate to bring his beloved child home safely. He hires a reluctant ¿birthday boy¿ Simon ¿Bagman¿ Leonidovich to ¿pay¿ the kidnappers. However, the South American abduction expert Leo Geske paints quite a dangerous picture depending on who snatched Kyra as kidnappings have become a major enterprise in South America. As Simon begins the extraction, he realizes a member of Big Jake¿s inner circle is partnering with the kidnapper; he just prays that it is not Caitlin Wells, who he is falling in love with.---- BAGMAN is an engaging thriller that hooks the reader the moment that Kyra realizes she has been abducted until the final confrontations as Simon is not sure whether Geske or Caitlin is the partner. Though ¿Luis¿ is too stereotyped as a cruel abusive South American kidnapper and no information surfaces on the child once the seizure occurs, fans will enjoy the heart pumping thriller. Jay MacLarty delivers a fast-paced winner that will send fans seeking Simon¿s previous appearance as THE COURIER.
