Children's Literature - Tiffany Erickson
Part craft instruction book, part fashion lesson, this volume shows bags from many different countries and eras. Bags are organized by type, from drawstring and pouch to wallets and envelope bags, with examples given and how-to instructions following. These are serious projects involving quite a bit of sewing and several different stitches, but the bags that can be created will be useful. Many young readers will enjoy the pictures more than anything else, and that truly is the best part of the book. There is a bumblebee bag, zipper bag, juice pack bags, and even a bag made from old jeans. The crafty reader will make the bags presented, but will likely want to embellish them even more to make the bags look more like the examples depicted. This book is definitely more a craft book than a multicultural book, but the varying designs will make craft-oriented readers long to create even more original bags. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson
