Overview

Bailey & Love's Short Practice of Surgery remains one of the world's pre-eminent medical textbooks, beloved by generations of surgeons, with lifetime sales in excess of one million copies. Under the guidance of the eminent editors, the expert team of contributors have revised and updated the material throughout while retaining those features praised in previous editions.

The content is sub-divided into parts for ease of reference. Sections devoted to the underlying principles of surgical practice, investigation and diagnosis, and pre-operative care are followed by chapters covering all aspects of surgical trauma. The remainder of the book considers each of the surgical specialties in turn, from elective orthopaedics through skin, head, and neck, breast and endocrine, cardiothoracic and vascular, abdominal and genitourinary to transplantation.

Key features:

  • Authoritative — emphasises the importance of effective clinical examination and soundly based surgical principles while taking account throughout of the latest developments in surgical practice
  • Current — text and illustrations fully revised with brand new chapters on patient safety, day care surgery (outpatient), and bariatric surgery
  • Readable — preserves the clear, direct writing style, uncluttered by technical jargon, that has proved so popular in previous editions
  • User-friendly — numerous photographs, explanatory line diagrams, learning objectives, summary boxes, biographical footnotes and memorable anecdotes support and enhance the textual descriptions

This 26th edition retains a wide appeal among all those studying surgery, from undergraduate medical students to those in preparation for their postgraduate surgical examinations. In addition, its high standing and reputation for unambiguous advice continue to make it the first point of reference for many practising surgeons.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"… superb new edition … has a thoroughly modem feel. Each chapter is written by recognised experts in the field, and the writing is clear and well structured. … well illustrated with radiographs, coloured line diagrams and photographs. … In short, this book encapsulates in one volume all that is required for a trainee surgeon approaching an examination in surgery in general and for a general surgeon whose practice crosses subspecialty boundaries."
—Royal College of Surgeons England

" … extremely good and easy to read … covers a huge amount of content, includes many cutting edge details that clinicians are currently using. This book is well-presented with many good diagrams and clinical pictures. Highly Commended."
—2014 BMA Medical Book Awards

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is the 26th edition of a comprehensive textbook of surgery originating in the United Kingdom.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a surgery textbook with a heavy emphasis on teaching illustrations.
Audience: Students of surgery at all levels are an appropriate audience for this work, which reflects the contributions of senior surgeons.
Features: The 81 chapters are grouped into 12 major parts, with a smaller 13th part on transplantation. Principles of surgery, including metabolism, management of shock, wound care, clinical research, and ethics begins the book. Imaging, perioperative care, and trauma are discussed in the next three parts. Later sections focus on specific organ systems and include orthopedics, head and neck, breast and endocrine surgery, vascular disorders, the abdomen and its contents. A large group of chapters describes genitourinary conditions. Transplantation and gynecology receive only one chapter each. Chapter presentations are eloquent and clear, and include textboxes and tables to summarize content. Illustrations and line drawings are in color and are of excellent quality. Photographs, also in color, have excellent resolution. Chapters have only brief reference lists, which are not supplemented by online material. In some chapters, only websites and books are cited, while other chapters contain a small number of citations from primary literature. A highly detailed subject index makes separate note of figures, tables, and content boxes, while a brief appendix describes common instruments in general surgery.
Assessment: This book can be strongly recommended for the clarity of its presentation and the high quality of its illustrations. Concerns are uneven topic coverage, short reference lists, which sometimes include only secondary literature, and limited detail on new technical strategies.
