Overview

Every Broken Promise PART 1- Freedom Is Sanity Chapter 2 "Hey, Perry, hang on!" A voice calls. Someone hauls me over to a group of lockers. "Miranda, can't we just go?" I beg, looking anxiously at the teenagers pouring out the doors. "School's out! Screw your textbooks!" She rolls her eyes and begins pulling out some textbooks, anyway. Her black hair is in a braid, and she wears a pale yellow cardigan, gray jeans, and a white shirt under the cardigan. "Okay, done!" She closes her locker, locks it, and turns to me. "Let's go!" I say in exasperation. We head for the doors quickly. Amber joins us, grinning in excitement. We push out the doors and head for the bus. After hopping up the steps to the bus's aisle, we look for seats. Miranda sits next to a friend of hers. Amber and I make our way to the back of the bus. There are two seats left- one next to our friend, Ashleigh, and one next to Noah- who I happen to have a huge crush on. Amber hurriedly grabs the spot beside Ashleigh. I stand by the seat Noah occupies. "Mind if I sit here?" I ask him, and gesture to the seat. "No problem." He looks a little embarrassed, but he slides over, and I drop beside him. "Thanks. Really didn't wanna catch the other bus." I smile, and he laughs. No one wants to catch the "other bus." All the sixth graders take it, and ninth graders like us don't get along with sixth graders- neither do the seventh graders and eigth graders, the other middle schoolers. We're high schoolers, though, so middle school is rarely brought up. I pull out my phone to see that Amber had texted me. I pull up our conversation. Her newest message reads: Amber: So, how's it going? With your first date? I turn to look at her. "First, you're right behind me. Second, not funny!" Amber smiles mischieviously. I turn away. "So, you have a phone, too?" Noah asks me. I glance at him. "Didn't you know?" I ask incredulously. We've been in that awkward kind-of-friends stage since sixth grade. Where we're friends, but still shy around each other. "Yeah, I guess. What's... um, what's your number? If you don't mind..." He looks shy. I smile. "No problem." I tell him my cell number, and he punches it into his phone. He adds me as a contact. "Hey, do you have Adam Joneson's number? I used to hbave it, and it got deleted." I ask. He looks a little crestfallen, but he gives it to me. "Thanks. He and I have been really good friends since first grade. We're not dating or anything." Noah looks slightly relieved. "Yeah, no problem." The bus pulls to a stop in the parking lot of a run-down old store. "Oh, that's my stop." I smile at him and stand. "Thanks again. For letting me sit with you." He nods. "Of course." "Such the gentleman." I tease, earning a smile that makes my day. "See ya around?" He asks. "Yeah. See ya." I shoulder my backpack and head off. I step off thee bus, which slams its doors and pulls out rapidly. I don't live in a great part of town- I was the only one off the bus. I look around warily and head towards home.
