Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Budding pastry chefs (and pastry tasters) will easily see their way to a yummy confection by turning the pages of Meijer's clever concoction. Three tiny, toque-wearing cooks serve as guides through this spiral-bound, practically wordless book, in which acetate overlays help to illustrate the various steps toward the finished product--a fresh-from-the-oven, extravagantly adorned creation. The overlays--sometimes used singly, sometimes several per paper page--not only add visual appeal but quickly explicate the process. An empty bowl on one page, for example, is next shown filled with eggs and sugar (first overlay); a cook, from his ladder perched at bowl's rim, whisks the ingredients together (second overlay); and a second helper spoons in the remaining ingredients (third overlay). While youngsters will require adult supervision to try out the simple recipe (found inside the back cover), this singular book offers the satisfaction of taking a creative project from start to (mouth watering) finish. Ages 3-8. (June)

PreS-Gr 1-A delightful, almost-wordless picture book but one that's unsuccessful as a cookbook. Children follow the step-by-step pictures as two pastry makers whip up a Scandinavian potato-starch flour cake. Heavy paper pages are overlaid with equally heavy transparencies that add, bit by bit, to the directions, from ingredients to finished product. Great care has been taken to insure that each overlaid transparency fits precisely with the one before so that the colorful, whimsical illustrations flow seamlessly. However, the instructions are incomplete, and it would take an experienced adult cook to interpret the visual clues. One must flip back several pages to find out the measurements for the dry ingredients and there is no mention of what the cake is covered with (whipped cream? frosting?) or how to make it. The full recipe appears on the back page-a little too late. A title that's lovely to look at, but not one to take literally.-Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA
