Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Baker is an early reader written in a simple one line format. Rebus pictures are used to depict the baker as he goes through the day at his job. Bright photographs of actual bakers working depict bagels and bread being made alone with many other foods made in a bakery. The introduction shows rebus picture words that will be found in the text. Children will enjoy an engaging high interest nonfiction story while being required to read only ten to fifteen basic sight words. This is a delightfully simple book perfect for early readers. Parents and teachers of children interested in learning more about what bakers do can search out additional information from a list of biographical references. Titles of related books, a video about cooking, and several web sites lead you to more information about how to cook with children. Baker is one of the books in the Benchmark Rebus Jobs In Town series. Other occupations covered in this series include firefighters, mail carriers, grocers, police officers, and veterinarians. This is a high interest series of books to be enjoyed by toddlers, preschoolers and early readers, and to be used by teachers and parents who wish to help children learn more about the community in which they live. A small book just right for little hands. Reviewer: Kathy Leggett
