Rotberg (education policy, George Washington U.) and contributors examine the modifications in education underway in 16 countries as they attempt to keep up with societal and global changes. Some (China, Russia, South Africa, Chile, and Germany) must react to dramatic political and economic changes. Others (France, Turkey, Sweden, Israel, and Japan) must let go of traditional education structures and methods to keep pace with the global marketplace. However, many (such as Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, England, Australia and the US) are in transition, finding challenges in their new immigrant populations, non-traditional students, or shifts in goals and priorities without the benefit of adequate resources.
