Ballads 2004: Tomorrow's Jazz Classics

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ronnie D. Lankford
Ballads 2004 is a simple, straightforward collection gathered from the work of a number of Nagel Heyer artists. The ballads of the collection are mostly instrumental, though several vocals are interspersed among them. The collection kicks off with the seven-minute "Springdale" from Claudio Roditi, an impressionistic composition that allows a simple trio -- trumpet, piano, and bass -- to unfold in a relaxed manner. Roy Powell's trio evokes a similar mood on "Love's Circles," a careful composition that combines a light touch with a classical air to achieve a felt depth. Others -- Wayne Escoffery, Robert Stewart, Wycliffe Gordon, and Darren Barrett -- rely on heavier ...

Others -- Wayne Escoffery, Robert Stewart, Wycliffe Gordon, and Darren Barrett -- rely on heavier ensembles to interpret their ballads of choice. Barrett's "On This Special Day," in particular, is the heaviest piece on the album, with a fat bassline and a more contemporary, experimental approach. Between these instrumentals, there are fine vocal offerings from Zona Sul featuring Sophie Wegener, Sarah Partridge, Ruth Young, and Ken Peplowski featuring Bobby Short. The album ends as it began, with a long instrumental ballad, this time a beautifully realized original called "Wishing Well" by Wycliffe Gordon. Ballads 2004 is an enjoyable collection whether one simply likes ballads or wants to check out Nagel Heyer's impressive roster.
