Overview

Most compilations of this nature -- 12 tracks, budget-priced -- tend to feature at least several well-known singles that received significant airplay. That's not the case with Barry White's volume of Ballads, which features only three charting R&B singles: "I've Got So Much to Give" (number five, 1973), "Put Me in Your Mix" (number eight, 1991), and "Dark and Lovely (You Over There)" (a number 29 duet with Isaac Hayes, 1992). The extensive selection of deep album cuts isn't bad; White doesn't receive enough credit for being a strong album artist. However, the set won't appeal to those who expect to hear familiar material, and more serious fans have double-disc sets like Gold, box sets like Unlimited, and the studio albums. Either Icon or Icon 2 will provide a better -- if similarly brief -- overview. ~ Andy Kellman
