Overview

Ballet Kitty wakes up in the pink—ballerina pink, of course—until she realizes she can’t find her slippers anywhere. Suddenly her leaps aren’t as lighthearted or her pirouettes as pretty. Where could they be? she mumbles and grumbles. How can she dance in her clunky old sneakers? But very quickly Kitty discovers that as long as she’s doing her most perfect plies and cutest curtsies, she’ll always be happy…right from her head to the tips of her little pointed toes!
Bernette Ford’s delightful dance-loving story and Sam Williams’s charming pas de deux of pussycats will inspire every little ballerina!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
Ballet Kitty is getting ready for her friend, Princess Pussycat, to come over and play. She wants to wear her ballet clothes, but cannot find her ballet slippers. When Princess Pussycat comes over, the two felines have a day of fun and Ballet Kitty finds out that she can still do perfect pirouettes and curtsies, even without her ballet slippers. The incredibly simple story lacks plot or interesting characters, appealing only at a most basic level to the average little girl who loves to play dress up. The illustrations are also simple but attract more attention than the story itself, with muted watercolor paintings that maintain the book's sweet and gentle feel, but they are not enough to liven up this story. An educator's use of the book in the classroom would take quite a bit of imagination, best used perhaps in early childhood classrooms to teach the color pink (the most prominent color in the illustrations), or as a practice book for early readers in first or second grade. With such a wide variety of beginning reader books on the market, however, there are many more to choose from. Recommended is the "Green Light Readers" series, a collection of early level reading books that have simple words along with interesting plots and humor to boot.
School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1 Ballet Kitty is preparing for her playdate with her friend Princess Pussycat. It should be a time of joy, but Kitty is distressed because she cannot find her pink ballet slippers and will have to play in her yucky, dirty pink sneakers instead. Despite this hindrance, the day is great fun, and the missing ballet slippers are found "just where she had left them the night before!" The back cover states that this book is "For little ballerinas everywhere," and there is absolutely no attempt to appeal to any other sort of reader. Pink permeates the simple, cutesy illustrations and the text is more than a tad treacly. That said, the book will be a huge hit with its intended audience of little girls who admire a pretty package. A purely supplemental purchase.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

While I thought I had hit the gold mine with this book (my daughter loves kittens and ballet) I couldn't have been more wrong. I couldn't believe the kitten says she doesn't feel pretty because she can't find her ballet slippers. What kind of message does this send to young girls? That they have to have pink on or ballet slippers to be pretty? How does one learn the definition of true beauty if they are being told it comes from wearing certain things? I am not reading this book to my daugther anymore.

My girl loves cat and when I first got this book from the library, we all felt in love. Nice story about friendship, role play, patience, and everything little girls like in between. Now I am ordering it for Xmas, can't wait to give it to her!
