Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
An evening ballet recital can seem like an intimidating event, but this endearing book makes the prospect appear outright enjoyable, helping alleviate some of the pressure young readers who are faced with the real-life challenge may feel. Billed as a book designed for preschool to kindergarteners, this "Ready to Read" story from the "Step into Reading" series includes large type, easy words, rhyme and rhythm and text paired with clues in the illustrations to help introduce emerging readers to the world of ballet. As the class arrives for warm-ups and the recital starts, children will learn about ballet-specific clothing and movements. Children will also have fun mimicking the leaping, swaying, and tippy-toe turns described in the text and illustrated in McNicholas' charming watercolors. In addition to all of the smiling fun, the proud ballet stars blow kisses and take bows at the end of the recital, conveying a sense of accomplishment in finishing the dance routines, where the children are, indeed, all ballet stars. In Holub's book the words seamlessly pair into rhymes that are story-specific, surprising, and a particular pleasure to read aloud. While the story is short, every word is interesting and action packed. The diverse dance class includes African American and Asian children, and although the group contains one boy, the subject matter, the two pages of stickers, and the soft, pastel watercolor illustrations might make the book more appealing to girls. However, the sticker sheets at the back of the book feature ballet themed items and more general shapes such as flowers and stars that all children, not just those interested in dance, will enjoy. Altogether, this is a delightful read that will have both children and adults pirouetting out of their seats. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene
