Join a group of friends and their dogs as they pack up their van for a day of fun at an enormous dog park. Once at the park, the friends observe a myriad of things to do and a lot of fun to be had. From the doggie beach, to the doggie pool, to the doggie bounce house, the friends spend the day with various dogs partaking in the fun activities offered. At the end of their busy day the friends are tired, and although they are reluctant for their day to end, they all pile back into the van and head for home. Although Steinke sets out to tell a fun, simple story, his tale does not flow well. There is not an evident overall message or objective by the book's conclusion. The illustrations are true to the author's promise in that they are zany cartoons that are fun to look at; however, they are not capable of saving the storyline all on their own. K-Gr 2—Prickles is reminiscent of Mo Willems's "Pigeon" stories (Hyperion): two cats and a pack of dust bunnies argue over the bunnies' fate. In Doctor Bugspit, strange patients visit the doctor's office and are cured with equally odd remedies. Super-Duper Dog Park details an epic journey to a truly fabulous dog park, while Brave Boy Knight, the most complex of the four, is the story of a would-be knight, his monster friend, and their adventures in the kingdom of the Animal Princess. The writing is consistently simple, clear, and often repetitious, with visual clues to aid comprehension. The layout is engaging and accessible, enhanced by large-print speech bubbles and vivid, cartoon-style art. With a background in hand-drawn animation, Aron Nels Steinke began self-publishing comics in 2006 with the help of a grant from the Xeric Foundation. Aron's all-ages graphic novel, Neptune, was published in 2009 by Sparkplug Comic Books and Tugboat Press. Currently, he spends his days as an elementary school teacher and his nights writing and drawing his next book. He lives in Portland, OR with his wife and three cats.
