Jamie has hiccups on the day of his school play! His best friend and co-star is determined to find a cure–no matter how silly, icky, or weird it might be! Will the show-HIC!-go on? Hiccups–everyone's had 'em, and nobody wants 'em. The familiar dilemma drives this comically exaggerated story of a boy-rabbit battling the inconvenience and embarrassment of a jumpy diaphragm. Hiccup! is an ideal choice for kids who are more attuned to sweeter brand of slapstick humor.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Jamie has the hiccups. He caught them this morning while eating his favorite breakfast. Everyone on the school bus has a different remedy. Will one of the suggestions cure him before he has to go on stage in the school play tonight? This short, full-color graphic novel addresses a common problem with many not-so-common solutions. Even Jamie's teachers get in on the action: the science teacher has a wacky invention, the school coach puts Jamie through a training regime, and the lunch lady creates a mystery (and not very appetizing) meal. All of the characters in this story are anthropomorphized animals, rendered in bright colors and a child-friendly, goofy illustration style. Part of the Balloon Toons imprint of "Early Reader Graphic Novels," this silly story will introduce a wide variety of onomatopoeic words and other challenging and uncommon vocabulary, while making those words more understandable in the context of the comic format. A fun read for younger readers. Reviewer: Raina Sedore

K-Gr 2—With its hilarious, witty, and fast-paced plot, Hiccup! will have beginning readers laughing out loud. Jamie, a bunny, is nervous about his big performance in the school play. His dad tries to get him out of bed, but the youngster tries every excuse to stay home. His father makes his favorite breakfast of pancakes and he forgets his nerves until he eats so fast that he develops hiccups. All of his friends try to help him but to no avail. Remedies from holding his breath until he turns purple to trying a teacher's invention of a super-fast spinning device called the Hic-Be-Gone 3000 fail. Each part of Jamie's attempt to rid himself of the troublesome hiccups is highlighted in bubbled text so readers can follow cures such as The Hiccup Workout or Hiccups for Lunch. The cartoon-style drawings clearly depict the characters' points of view, providing decoding details for emerging readers and humorous text for reluctant ones. A must-have for younger graphic-novel collections.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI
