More About This Book

Overview

*****
Two chinese boys are sent to the remote village of Phoenix Mountain, near the border of Tibet, to begin the process of "reeducation" implemented by Mao Zedong at the end of the sixties. This included hard manual labour, inhuman living conditions, and a bombardment of propeganda. Everything changes for them when they discover a secret suitcase filled with classics of Western literature. Thanks to the lectures of Balzac, Dumas, Stendhal, and many others, the two youths discover a world of poetry, romance and passion that was unknown to them; and they learn that a book can be instrumental in winning over the attractive Sastrecilla, the young daughter of the tailor from a nearby village. The author, who was himself "reeducated" in the early 1970s and emigrated to France in 1984, has penned a startling and lucid story that evokes the nightmarish world of Mao's China as seen through the eyes of two utterly charming young boys.
