Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This is a real treat for the senses. Marshall's visual games will have readers craving for a trip to the beach. The round orange ball of a peach peeks through a die-cut on one page; when the reader turns the page it is actually "a peach sunrise" on a tropical island. The taste of sweets continues with candy cane sails, saltwater taffy turtles, tutti-frutti fish, sundae sunset, cotton candy clouds, and finally, as night visits the island, the lemon frosting waves beneath a bright banana moon. Even the typeface cleverly matches the flavor of each page. The bold, stylized illustrations, intriguing visual tricks, and delicious colors make this a wonderful treat.
School Library Journal
PreS-K--Like many of Tana Hoban's books, Banana Moon promotes the visual-literacy skill of recognizing that objects are made up of patterns and shapes. Therefore, part of one object can look like another. A sea voyage to "the land of cinnamon sand" sets the scene, as readers are encouraged to look out of the porthole. Die-cut circles show objects such as a peach, candy canes, and salt-water taffy. Turn the page and the peach becomes a rising sun, the candy canes turn into striped sails, and the salt-water taffy is the pattern on a turtle's back. The bold flat shapes stand out well against the smooth solid background shades of blue, turquoise, salmon, and yellow. The type, while always clear, whimsically takes color and even form from the objects described. For example, the words "cotton candy" are appropriately pink and puffy while "peach" is a blushing orange yellow. This simple yet attractive book makes good use of the die-cut device while effectively playing with the transformative nature of patterns.--Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
Kirkus Reviews
Marshall (Look Once, Look Twice, 1995, etc.) uses die-cut illustrations as a tease, for objects glimpsed on the other side of a hole are not what they appear: Candy canes turn out to be the sails of sailboats, and salt-water taffy is transformed into the whorls of a turtle's shell. Once readers grasp the conceit, they'll have a ball attempting to figure out what's on the next page, and Marshall imbues each visual riddle with possibilities, so that an ice cream sundae miraculously becomes a red setting sunĂ¾the whipped cream is a billowing cloud, the splash of chocolate sauce and the stem of the cherry are wings of birds. The colors are utterly eye-catching and the die-cuts capture small details, e.g., a palm tree is cropped to look like the stem leaves of a peach. The pages of the book are thick and coated, making them durable and easy for small fingers to turn. (Picture book. 4-8)
