Overview

Based on renowned author Stephen Ambrose's nonfiction book of the same name, HBO's original miniseries Band of Brothers recounts the heroic efforts of the U.S. Army's Easy Company, who parachuted into France on D-Day (June 6, 1944). For the inspirational score, executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg tapped Grammy-winning songwriter/composer Michael Kamen (Die Hard, Metallica's S&M). Working with the London Metropolitan Orchestra, Kamen has created a sweeping, choir-accented orchestral work that subtly echoes the range of emotions conjured by the series' heart-tugging images of World War II. Featuring musical segments from each of the program's ten episodes, the pieces range in mood from the uplifting strings and soaring chorus of "Main Theme" to the somber mini-movements of piano and forlorn oboe that color the horror of a scene called "Discovery of the Camp." A children's choir lends the a cappella "Plaisir d'Amour" an aura of innocence and induces plenty of chills, as does a dark and elegant arrangement of Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131. In light of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that occurred during the period the miniseries originally aired, Band of Brothers is a proud testament to America's resiliency during times of tragedy.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
Michael Kamen is a master at capturing nostalgia, especially when the age in question is the bittersweet "tie a yellow ribbon" landscape of World War II. For the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, Kamen re-visits much of the same territory he explored with fellow sepia-tone junkie Roger Waters on Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Final Cut. Alternately tragic and uplifting, Band of Brothers is a raw, patriotic, and wistfully elegiac tome of swelling choirs, salvation army brass band, and melodious strings that compliment the series' balanced depiction of the horrors of war and the unpredictable sweetness of humanity.

This music will bring you to tears and fill you with joy at the same time! I turn up Band of Brothers Suite One as loud as I can in my car; The Mission Begins stirs the soul; Discovery of the Camp will haunt you; Austria...just beautiful. A must CD for everyone...as is seeing the series Band of Brothers.

I have not seen this film and I'm not sure I will (sometimes you just get tired of seeing death and suffering, even if it ends in triumph). However, the music is excellent. I purchased the soundtrack based solely on reviews and was pleased to see that the reviews fit the soundtrack. But the reason I only gave four stars is because the Band of Brothers: Suite 1 & 2 (track 2 & 3 & some of 4) could have been put into the movie Robin Hood without a second thought (which consenquently was also written by Michael Kamen). It was disappointing to me that a similar theme was used as title tracks on this. Aside from that, the music is excellent. While melodic and relaxing, it also conveys a sense of sadness and anxiety that one might expect when preparing for life threatening experiences. This would be an excellent addition to your music collection. If you enjoy this soundtrack, I would strongly recomend the soundtrack to The Thin Red Line, by Hanz Zimmer.

If you are a fan of the mini-series, you will definitely want to add this album to your music library! It is emotional and grabs the listener from the very beginning with the Main Theme to the end of the album with the Requiem. The listener definitely can envision all parts of the mini-series as each song is played. I love it and recommend it to all fans of the GREATEST mini-series, 'Band of Brothers!'
