All Music Guide - Richard S. Ginell
The consensus of critics, as well as cold hard sales figures, says that Band on the Run was Paul McCartney's most successful solo album -- and so, shortly after the 25th anniversary of its release, Band on the Run got the deluxe boxed treatment. The original album itself was remastered yet again, the sound improved only slightly over previous versions, and the track order made to follow that of the U.S. release the British version does not include "Helen Wheels". The real attraction of this box, though, is the second disc, a radio-style program containing interviews with Paul, Linda Mac, Wings member Denny Laine, and other contributors, plus demos, rehearsals, ...

The real attraction of this box, though, is the second disc, a radio-style program containing interviews with Paul, Linda Mac, Wings member Denny Laine, and other contributors, plus demos, rehearsals, assorted outtakes, and edited portions from the original album. The documentary makes it clear that not only was Band on the Run an artistic triumph over very trying conditions -- the defection of two-fifths of Wings and the whimsical decision to record in the primitive, sometimes dangerous conditions of Lagos, Nigeria -- it was a marketing triumph as well. Capitol promotion man Al Coury tells how he spotted the hitmaking potential of "Jet," the album's second single and the one that really launched it into chart orbit. A lot of attention, perhaps too much, is also paid to the making of the album's cover photo, elevating it to the level of the cover art of Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road. Interestingly, Laine gets one fact wrong on the interview disc -- they played "Picasso's Last Words," not "Mamunia," in Ginger Baker's Lagos studio -- which Mark Lewisohn's authoritative liner notes make clear. You also get a reproduction of the poster that came with the LP. All of this comes at a two-CDs-for-the-price-of-one deal -- which should be downright irresistible for those who haven't replaced their original LPs.

Pauls Best Album with a little history

Band On The Run is certainly Paul's best post Beatles album and as such most of these songs are very familiar but they are best heard in the context of the album. It is rather odd that, so far, all attempts to make a greatest hits album of Paul's work has ended with a very unsatisfying result but put back into the context of their original album these songs come vibrantly alive. This anniversary edition is very nice. The original album has never sounded better and the second CD, which is mostly interviews on the making of the album (with a couple of rare cuts), is more interesting and fun than I expected it to be (although I doubt if its a CD thats going to be played very often). The nice thing is that they have put a very reasonable price on this set. On a personal note: James Coburn was always a favorite actor (who is on the cover) and its hard to know that we'll never have another movie from him, but I can always watch "The Presidents Analyst" when I need a good laugh.

    Great packaging!

This is a fantastic re-release of a fantastic set of numbers. It is a must have. WHO CARES IF THE CASE DOES NOT FIT A CD CARRIER! Those of us oldies appreciate the old, multi Lp box look. BUY IT! AND ENJOY IT!

    So Much Fun

Brings back some memories and manages to remind me how great McCartney was (and still is - I guess)and what a great time that was. So sad now that there's only two Beatles left, all the more reason to listen to Band On The Run again and again and again. Helen Wheels and 1984 ROCK!!! All new artists would do well to add this album to their collection.

    best buy

this limited edition album was one that i couldn't wait to pick up. I listened to it with my friend Jim Carroll of Battle Creek. He is not a beatles fan and really enjoyed listening to the cd with me. The background information was great and it sounded better than ever

    Great Anniversary Album!!!!

The remastered and expanded edition of Band on the Run is fantastic. The original album is there, along with a second CD full of bonus tracks and interviews. The only problem with the package is the case is too big to fit in a CD holder.
