He was abandoned by his owers because he needs an operation and they couldn't afford it. Lizzie and her family take Bandit in and begin fundraising for the expensive procedure. Maria and her Uncle Teo are also a big help. Maria and Lizzie establish competing dog-walking businesses to raise funds. Everyone who meets Bandit falls instantly in love - except for Uncle Teo, who thinks he's a little too small and fluffy. In the end, Bandit's operation is a success. Uncle Teo is won over by the resilient puppy and agrees to adopt him.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Bandit could have been dropped off by his owners anywhere but the truck stop diner and he might not have lived another day. When the cook arrived for work, she found him at the back door, wrapped up in a red towel and sitting in a discarded lettuce box. The note said that the people he belonged to could no longer keep him because he was sick and needed an operation they could not afford. Lizzie's family served as foster parents for the local animal shelter and she knew as soon as she laid eyes on Bandit that he was going home with her. Everyone who saw the loveable little Shih Tzu fell in love with him. When Lizzie's dad arrived at the diner to take her home, he was immediately won over by the little bundle. Lizzie and her friend Maria devise a plan for raising the money to pay for the surgery that Bandit would soon receive. A less than enthusiastic relative would prove to the girls to be the hero of the day, for them and for Bandit. This is another story in the series "The Puppy Place" and will be a delightful addition to the Early Readers' fiction section. The author touches on loyalty and friendship, responsibility and the joy of pets in this little volume of 92 pages, and includes an introduction to the next title in the series. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
