Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
A new title in the "U.S. Presidents" series from the Checkerboard Biography Library collection, this sturdy hardcover volume gives beginning readers the high points of the life of our nation's new leader, President Barack Obama. The author traces President Obama's journey from his youngest years to his historic victory in the 2008 presidential election in short chapters filled with interesting facts, and nicely illustrated with color photos of President Obama with family members, friends, and professional colleagues. The text is written in lively, but age-appropriate, language. The pages are laid out in a graphic style that makes navigating the book a pleasure: All of the sidebars, photos, and captions are a seamless part of the overall book design. What really adds value to this title is the extended front and back matter on the general topic of U.S. presidents and the U.S. government. Contained in the book are a listing/explanation of the branches of our nation's federal government, the qualifications for the office of president and term limitations, a summary of how our electoral college works, a diagram of the presidential line of succession, the "job benefits" a president receives, a timeline of all of our U.S. Presidents and their terms, a glossary of political terms used in the text, a list of website links, a subject index, and, last but not least, information on how to write the President a letter. This title is packed with useful teaching tools and would be a great addition for any classroom or library. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

Gr 2-5

If your library needs a full set of presidential biographies, this is a decent choice. The profusion of color and black-and-white pictures will give students a leg up on the old "dress up as a president and give a short report" assignment, and the brief declarative sentences keep the books within the reach of most first chapter-book readers. The texts are a bit choppy, and pronoun antecedents sometimes suffer along the way, but the strong layout keeps each title interesting. That's saying something, especially when it comes to those hard-to-remember 19th-century presidents such as Tyler, Taylor, Polk, and Pierce. Pages and pages of facts about the presidency (qualifications, benefits, line of succession, etc.) plus a full list of the men and their terms pad each volume.
