Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
This biography traces Barack Obama's life as he struggled to find his identity and place in society. His multiracial background, a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, fueled this search. The reader learns about his parents' lives, the loss of his father, and how he grew up with his maternal white grandparents in Hawaii after his mother remarried and moved to Indonesia. He excelled in college at Columbia and Harvard Law School yet decided to start a career in public service to help those less fortunate. He came into national awareness after he gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Obama subsequently ran for and won the presidency of the United States in 2008. Photographs and illustrations of places, family, and friends provide a further glimpse into his life. The book was originally published in 2008 under the title, Barack Obama: An American Story.
