Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Barbara Pierce, a descendent of President Franklin Pierce, married George Bush and became First Lady and, depending on how the 2000 election goes, she also may become the mother of a president. With all of that, she comes across as a warm, levelheaded woman who was entirely devoted to her husband, his career and her family. She traveled extensively with George and became an expert at moving and setting up a household, having done so many times (29 different homes during her first 40 years of married life). In addition to learning about Barbara and her family, kids will get a larger view of what was happening in the country during that period through the many full and three-quarter page insets. A good introduction to this contemporary first lady that is liberally accompanied by black-and-white and full color photographs. There is a timeline, list of all the presidents and first ladies, quick facts pages about Barbara and George, bibliography, list of Internet sites and an index. Part of the "Encyclopedia of First Ladies" series.
