Overview

There's more to Samuel Barber than his famous Adagio for Strings. This collection offers what are arguably Barber's greatest orchestral works, revealing the lyrical gifts of this underrated American master. Of course the great Adagio deserves its fame, and here it gets an emotionally intense and beautifully paced performance from Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis strings. But we are also treated to the marvelous mischief of the overture to Sheridan's Restoration comedy, "The School for Scandal," as well as the concentrated, rhetorical power of the Three Essays. "Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance" is an orchestral spectacular of cinematic extravagance, and the SLSO has no trouble meeting its demands, proving itself an orchestra of the first rank.
