Barber: Cello Concerto, Adagio for Strings, Medea Suite

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Barber's Cello Concerto is a richly romantic work, with orchestral writing so vivid and opulent that it could be mistaken for a film score. The cello part is woven more tightly than usual into the orchestral fabric, requiring real reciprocity between soloist and conductor. Wendy Warner and Marin Alsop are in total accord throughout this vibrant performance. Warner's sound is lovely -- although not as robust as Yo-Yo Ma's on his Sony CD -- and her playing is deeply committed, rhythmically vital, and beautifully shaped. This rarely heard work, written for Martha Graham in 1946, is knotty stuff. Barber's melodies have an angular, exotic aspect that evokes the savagery of this ancient Greek tragedy. Alsop's performance of the well-known Adagio for Strings is notable for its sublime dignity; it is deeply expressive without being at all indulgent. The recorded sound is superb.
