Levick's stunning, sharp color photographs, 507 in all, grace the pages of this extraordinary look at Catalan art nouveau, or "modernista", architecture in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Spain, which still boasts the largest concentration of buildings in that style. Permanyer provides an introduction to the history of the city's architecture in general and the "modernista" style in particular. However, the heart of the book is an intimate look at 63 buildings erected from the turn of the century through the second decade of the twentieth century, when "modernista" architecture flourished in Barcelona. The buildings are shown in broad facade and in close-ups that highlight details of innovative ornamental stone- and metalwork, oriel windows, mosaics, entranceways, balconies, parapets, and more. The accompanying commentary varies in length but identifies the architects, the original inhabitants, and special features. A feast for the eyes and a nice, if expensive, complement to Hughes' "Barcelona" , this will delight architecture and Barcelona buffs.
