Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Emily B. Cook
Big dogs, little dogs, yappy dogs, and nappy dogs all meet up at the dog park for fun and frisky adventures in this colorfully themed picture book. Inspired by her frequent trips to Tompkins Square Park’s dog run in New York City, the author uses rhyme to carry readers from beginning to end. Effectively managing to keep a bouncy, progressive rhythm paired with simple, yet colorful, illustrations that are often humorous and playful, the visual appeal will draw children into the text. Some of the word choices are a bit awkward at times; but overall it is a very good choice for children who love animals, and dogs specifically. The illustrations themselves are uncomplicated, but the varied mediums used and the bright color choices make them interesting. Utilizing watercolor and paper cutouts, the author/illustrator creates visual interest throughout, breaking up the relatively flat look of the watercolor with texture and dimension. Given that the visual aspects of a picture book can be the “hook” that draws the audience’s interest, Ruelle does a nice job of pairing this fairly simple story with enough artistic appeal to help keep children engaged. Reviewer: Emily B. Cook; Ages 4 to 8.

PreS-Gr 1- Snappy rhymes describe a plethora of dogs on the way to the canine park, their activities there, and their return home. This fun-to-read story is an ode to pups of all types, breeds, sizes, colors, personalities, etc., as exemplified by this couplet: "Thin dog, grin dog, gulping, lapping./Hairless, careless, digging, yapping." Each couplet gets a spread showing the dogs and their actions. Two verse-free pages feature 15 dogs engaged in various activities with accompanying onomatopoeia, for example, "pant, pant, pant," "sniff sniff sniff," "A-r-r-o-o-o-o-o," and "G-r-r-r-r." The colorful collages, made from papers hand-painted in watercolors, are reminiscent of a high school art project in the best possible way. They capture the essence of these animals and their behaviors. Great for storytime or anytime that calls for a book brimming with dogs.-Catherine Callegari, formerly at Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

Kirkus Reviews
Doggies abound in this energetic and enthusiastic showcase of assorted canines capering in the park. Hound dogs and round dogs, small dogs and tall dogs, hot dogs and dot dogs, fat dogs and rat dogs, strong dogs and long dogs, thin dogs and grin dogs, pack dogs and track dogs, dark dogs and bark dogs, sneak dogs and leak dogs-all kinds of dogs cavort across the page, running, strolling, dashing, splashing, fetching, begging, rolling, gulping and so on. The jaunty rhyming text and bright watercolor collages showcase dogs of all shapes and sizes. From the opening pages where dogs converge on the park to the closing scenes of soapy mutts splashing in the bath and weary puppies curled up for doggie-dreams, this canine tour de force should amuse and amaze dog fans for its delightful diversity.
