Barley and Gold is one of the most captivating and emotional works I have ever read. The depth of the characters and the tightness of the plot draw the reader into a magical world where one is left to swim in an awesome sea of imagery and sensory detail. Doe's style is simple yet powerful; subtle yet magnificent. Words cannot express the degree to which this novel affected me. It is a must read!! I only hope, for the benefit of humanity, that this work is brought to film for the world's enjoyment.

Although I don't read much fiction, 'Barley and Gold' captivated me. I found myself being pulled along by the story and then wanting to jump ahead to see what happens next. 'Barley and Gold' gives us insight into one man's quest to make sense of his world. Fabian Dakota struggles to come to grips with a past he can't change while at the same time realizing that the future is still beyond his control. I feel that this book examines what everyone wants from life - answers. Why did this happen? What am I supposed to do now? What will happen next? Answers may not be immediately available but, in time, we may be lucky enough to come to know them. This book is so full of description that I could picture every scene clearly in my mind. The barley serves as the unifying backdrop of both Fabian's past and his future. I bought this book because Brian is my brother so that may taint my review. In all honesty, however, I read 'Barley and Gold' because I got wrapped up in the story and forgot about my trivial connection to this great book.
