    Why not?

    I purchased this for myself last year. Even though I was an English major, I had read fewer than 40 of these novels, which I found shameful. It arrived in eight boxes, around twenty five pounds each. It was, of course, a treat to unpack, and more fun to shelve. I can't imagine these in hardcover. I would guess that would be close to 600 or more pounds of books. As it is, I dread the day I have to move. There is no need to comment on the stories, however the binding and muted colors blend well together. The boxes arrived with some damage, however the books were unblemished. The books I have read or looked through so far all have relevant timelines of the author's life, a long introduction, end notes, sometimes footnotes, questions in the back to provoke academic thought, relevant commentary by other critics and novelists of the story and further recommended related reading including biographies and criticism.

    Great Deal for Library of Classic Literature

    I have amassed this collection over a length of time and spent far more than the given price to purchase these great works of literature. I have enjoyed rereading old favorites and gaining a new appreciation of the writer's ability to bring the characters to life and give them the capability to capture my attention again and again. I have also enjoyed reading new works in which I was lacking knowledge. If this collection brings any book lover half the enjoyment it has brought to me then it is worth the price four fold. My enjoyment of this collection is so sincere that I am now working on recreating it on my Nook.

    Too bad it's not hardcover.

    This is definitely a great collection to acquire. The price for it is more than reasonable. It is a timeless investment, but it is paperback. I would buy this collection with my eyes closed if it was hardcover. I own a lot of these books already, and I'm willing to give them up to friends and relatives, if I could get a complete library of classics in hardcover.

    too little too late for me

    I'm 38 and have been collecting B&N classics since 21. I have quite the collection as I've spent quite a bit of money for the collection. It's just too late for me. I would have loved this years ago. I could have had all the books, placed them on my bookcases, and read them one by one. Pure bliss! I used to be an exclusive classics reader. I was afraid the NYT bestsellers would rot my mind :) I'm getting my second masters and I've wishlisted Rosetta Stone French and Irish as gifts, but to be truthful I'd rather have this collection, but there is a problem. I already have at least half of these books. What do I do? How do I weed through them? I can't return them to B&N. I can take them to the used book store and get like a quarter for each. A yard sale would net me no more than a quarter for each of the books. I would never get a return on my investment. My books are pristine - no writing, no highlighting, and no dog ears. I love and respect my books as the treasures that they are. I kept my textbooks perfect too. Can you offer this whole collection - all 199 books for the nook for a special price? My husband has a nook and he already has many of these books for me but if there was a was to easily download the entire collection of 199 books as a package deal B&N would be redeemed in my eyes and I'd get my own nook.

    Beautiful Set

    I received this in eight separate boxes via UPS. The set is wonderfully done and you can without a doubt witness the passion put into every book included. Whether through the unique artwork, synopsis, or author background, this book set has become one of my favorite treasures.

    Already have them all

    It's actually cheaper to wait for the sale "Buy 2 get one free". That, plus the 10% BN discount results in an almost 40% discount.
    Just buy books of the same price together.

    Great buy!

    What I am doing is this: I wait until B&N has their classics sale "buy two, get third free" and since I have the BN discount card, I get the 10% off on top of getting every third book free. It's way cheaper that way. No need to buy them all at once as these sales go on several times a year. Also, I am replacing the titles that I own already with these BN classics because I want to have them all be part of a single collection. What I am doing with my old titles is I am saving them all in a box so when it's my kids' turn to read them, I can give them to my kids. These titles get assigned at school at one point or another so why donate them or sell them? Save them for your kids, or your grand kids.

    I love the BN collection because of the additional biographical information and notes that they include about the author, plus, the typeface and font size makes it easy to read. I absolutely love this collection.

    Ditto regarding hardcover

    I was looking for more titles in the Essential Thinkers series and saw this. This needs to be hardbound as was my search target. What a library that would be to share with the grandchildren!

    WOW!

    What a fantastic collection, although I do have to agree with anonymous on the hard cover issue.

    I don't know the cost but, I would probably purchase it for my grandchildren.

    I missed out on this wonderful collection and would purchase it

    I missed out on this wonderful collection and would purchase it in a heartbeat. 8 kids and a grandkid could use it. Paper or hardcover in good condition would make a great collection. My pen name @aol if there's one set out there available.

    Want it, Won't Get It

    Amazing! I would get it, but I don't have the money. Plus, some books like Maggie, Dracula, and the Essential Poe, I don't want, so I think that I'll buy them one by one (induvidually). I've got a bookshelf at home that is completely empty except for around eight barnes and noble classics, and I want to fill it up. One b&n classic every month, two in the summer months when I have more reading time.
