Overview

It so happens that the right teacher can take the form of a book. Gray's Anatomy is one of those few titles that practically everybody has heard of, and with good reason--it is a scientific and artistic triumph. Not just a dry index of parts and names, Gray's lets the natural beauty and grace of the body's interconnected systems and structures shine forth from the page. Using sumptuous illustrations and clear, matter-of-fact descriptions, Dr. Gray unleashed a classic on the world more than 100 years ago. Its clarity and usefulness keep it in print today. Whether you want to understand yourself or others, knowledge of our physical parts and how they fit together is essential. Gray's Anatomy provides that information in a simple, timeless format that cleanly dissects a body of knowledge grown over centuries. This book will not only fill the needs of people in the medical profession, but will please artists and naturalists as well.

It is part of Barnes & Noble's series of quality leatherbound volumes. Each title in the series presents a classic work in an attractively designed edition bound in genuine bonded leather. These books make elegant additions to any home library.

"A high quality, luxury, leather bound reprint of the very first edition of this classic published in 1858."

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
The British Gray's is a colorful, stylishly illustrated version of the classic anatomy reference with commentary and essays by specialists in their fields, and at nearly twice the price of the American edition one would expect no less. This current edition features the conventional divisions of study with numerous classification changes, including new sections on surface anatomy and neonatal anatomy. Much of the information provided reflects the tremendous changes and advances in molecular biology and imaging which have occurred since 1989. Includes photographs as well as diagrams and drawings. Phenomenal Reference Book

I am a teenager who is highly interested in the medical field and had to have this book. Not only is the information valuable, but the edition is beautiful. The content is thought-provoking and goes beyond any biology course. And though the language is challenging, the diagrams aid in understanding a great deal, for, as long as one owns a dictionary, reading the book is manageable. I recommend this book to anyone who loves science and wishes to learn more.

The ORIGINAL and, BEST Gross Anatomy Text

I am not a physician, but I am afflicted with many neurological defects from birth. This text has allowed me to have conversations with my neurosurgeon at his level. If you are seriously considering any field that involves detailed knowledge of the basic workings of human physiology, you must read this text first. Be prepared to buy a second copy for reference once you have devoured your first as a learning tool. My first copy is completely coming apart. That is a GOOD thing! This text should not be one of those used for "SHOW."

    I Also Recommend:

The book isn't even close to up to date and is more of a teaser.

It's not worth the money, go look for Anatomy for Dummies, it's a hundred times better and more up to date which is depressing. If you want a book on Anatomy look for an up to date book, like Gray's 40th edition or Atlas of Human Anatomy.

And they really need to list on the plastic coating that the book is from 1901. Even if you're only minorly interested in anatomy this will do nothing more than confuse you, don't waste the money unless you just want something cheaply made to store on a shelf.

Great gift for above avg child

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my teenage daughter. She is interested in pursuing a career in the medical field and can't put the book down. Not only has it increased her knowledge about the human body, but has also increased her vocabulary.

    Great Atatomy Book

This book is not only rich with its leather bound binding, but it is very thorough of the human body. I don't understand the negative reviews, as I feel this book covers everything anyone needs to know without complication of understanding. Very easy read and very knowledgeable for anyone wanting to know every function and term for the human body. Easy access index to go right to the terminology of what you are interested in. I love the structure and setup of this books index, very easy to follow. I believe this book should belong in every household.

Incredibly boring, not like the show at all!

I picked this up hoping to get a sneak peek at what happens in the next season (someone told me the show was based on a book and I got really excited), but boy was I disappointed! I'm like 50 pages in and they haven't even mentioned ONE of the characters yet! It seems like it's still background information, but it doesn't have anything to do with the show! Just some boring medical terms. What gives, Amazon?? I flipped ahead and still see no mention of Meredith or Derek or Christina. I mean, can see why they made it into a TV show, I can't believe anyone has the patience to go through this long boring piece of crap. Why are there so many good reviews? Don't pretend to like a book version of something just to seem "educated" when the series is so much better! Ugh. Skip this clunker and just Netflix.

Excellent manifesto of the intricacies of the human body.

Excellent book. This book is essential for the spend thrifty, great value for its price. Language is simple, easy to comprehend and fantastically engaging. It doesn't take half a brain to understand it. Great buy for those intent on becoming perspicacious about the physical edifice that is our body.

Beware of obsolete nomenclature. Otherwise, this is an excellent source of knowledge. I wish I could get my hands on a modern work with this breadth. One word to barnes & noble though, the back cover misidentifies the temporal lobe. oops!

    Love!

To the person who gave this book one star and said, "It wasn't up to date," that is the point! It is the first edition anatomy book, published in 1858. If you want study material for school this is not the book. However, if you are interested in what they thought anatomy was like over 150 years ago, this is the book for you. (We obviously have come a long way, medically, since then.) I am a medical student and personally love that they have this historical book in the leatherbound classics collection.

    Great Anatomy Reference Book

This book is great for its price, but the only problem is that some information is outdated. The gross anatomy remains the same today as it was then but I would avoid using the histology section as a reference because we have learned much more about tissues in the past hundred years. Other than that this book has beautiful illustrations and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in anatomy who wants to learn more. The text is easy to read as long as you know at least some anatomy before reading it.

    A decisive piece of history

I initially bought this for a friend who was in the process of opening his first doctor's office. This wasn't meant to be used as a scientific reference though. It seemed to me an old version of the most important work of medicine in the 20th century would be a welcome addition to a doctor's shelf. He absolutely loved the idea.

The book itself is amazing and you can easily get lost in the amount of details, be it in the illustrations or the different treaties on the human body. Henry Gray's writing remains perfectly readable, pleasant at times despite the formal nature of this non-fiction.

As for the binding, the paper's condition, the leather... Disregard any negative comment made about the B&N leatherbound classics. All my reservations disappeared when I got the fantasy collection (alice, grimm, andersen, narnia). These books are top notch, regardless of the exceptional bargain they propose, and only, only if you mind reading at home, sitting, lying comfortably somewhere, should you not buy them. But again, if you wanted pocket library you wouldn't be here in the first place.

    Amazing!!

My copy of Gray's Anatomy arrived today and I have not been able to put it down. An easy read considering the context and very beautiful. I will be ordering another copy for my daughter's birthday as she is wanting to attend medical school and this will give her the perfect idea of what she has to look forward to. I'd highly consider getting this for your own libraries if for no other reason the the cover and illustrations themselves!!!

    Pleased

I purchased this book because my aunt is an R.N. and was raving about her paperback copy. It is a little difficult to read, but stands up to the reputation. I took three medical related classes in High School (Health, Health Occupations, and Biology). This book made me feel like I wasted my time on all those classes. I still wish to yell at my former teachers. No muscles in the lower back my gluteus maximus!
