Meet the Author

C. S. Lewis
C. S. Lewis was famous both as a fiction writer and as a Christian thinker, and scholars sometimes divide his personality in two. Yet a large part of Lewis's appeal, for both his audiences, lay in his ability to fuse imagination with instruction. "Let the pictures tell you their own moral," he once advised writers of children's stories. "But if they don't show you any moral, don't put one in."

Biography

C. S. Lewis was famous both as a fiction writer and as a Christian thinker, and his biographers and critics sometimes divide his personality in two: the storyteller and the moral educator, the "dreamer" and the "mentor." Yet a large part of Lewis's appeal, for both his audiences, lay in his ability to fuse imagination with instruction. "Let the pictures tell you their own moral," he once advised writers of children's stories. "But if they don't show you any moral, don't put one in. ... The only moral that is of any value is that which arises inevitably from the whole cast of the author's mind."

Storytelling came naturally to Lewis, who spent the rainy days of his childhood in Ireland writing about an imaginary world he called Boxen. His first published novel, Out of the Silent Planet, tells the story of a journey to Mars; its hero was loosely modeled on his friend and fellow Cambridge scholar J.R.R. Tolkien. Lewis enjoyed some popularity for his Space Trilogy (which continues in Perelandra and That Hideous Strength), but nothing compared to that which greeted his next imaginative journey, to an invented world of fauns, dwarfs, and talking animals -- a world now familiar to millions of readers as Narnia.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book of the seven-volume Chronicles of Narnia, began as "a picture of a Faun carrying an umbrella and parcels in a snowy wood," according to Lewis. Years after that image first formed in his mind, others bubbled up to join it, producing what Kate Jackson, writing in Salon, called "a fascinating attempt to compress an almost druidic reverence for wild nature, Arthurian romance, Germanic folklore, the courtly poetry of Renaissance England and the fantastic beasts of Greek and Norse mythology into an entirely reimagined version of what's tritely called 'the greatest story ever told.'"

The Chronicles of Narnia was for decades the world's bestselling fantasy series for children. Although it was eventually superseded by Harry Potter, the series still holds a firm place in children's literature and the culture at large. (Narnia even crops up as a motif in Jonathan Franzen's 2001 novel The Corrections). Its last volume appeared in 1955; in that same year, Lewis published a personal account of his religious conversion in Surprised by Joy. The autobiography joined his other nonfiction books, including Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Great Divorce, as an exploration of faith, joy and the meaning of human existence.

Lewis's final work of fiction, Till We Have Faces, came out in 1956. Its chilly critical reception and poor early sales disappointed Lewis, but the book's reputation has slowly grown; Lionel Adey called it the "wisest and best" of Lewis's stories for adults. Lewis continued to write about Christianity, as well as literature and literary criticism, for several more years. After his death in 1963, The New Yorker opined, "If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels."

Good To Know

The imposing wardrobe Lewis and his brother played in as children is now in Wheaton, Illinois, at the Wade Center of Wheaton College, which also houses the world's largest collection of Lewis-related documents, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

The 1994 movie, Shadowlands, based on the play of the same name, cast Anthony Hopkins as Lewis. It tells the story of his friendship with, and then marriage to, an American divorcee named Joy Davidman (played by Debra Winger), who died of cancer four years after their marriage. Lewis's own book about coping with that loss, A Grief Observed, was initially published under the pseudonym N. W. Clerk.

Several poems, stories, and a novel fragment published after Lewis's death have come under scrutiny as possible forgeries. On one side of the controversy is Walter Hooper, a trustee of Lewis's estate and editor of most of his posthumous works; on the other is Kathryn Lindskoog, a Lewis scholar who began publicizing her suspicions in 1988. Scandal or kooky conspiracy theory? The verdict's still out among readers.

    Beautiful book

I have been searching for a hardback version of the Chronicles of Narina for a while and this is the most beautiful copy I've seen. I love that the books are ordered in the way the author intended and that there is an explanation in the back as why they are arranged in this way. I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who loves C.S. Lewis.

    Beautiful edition

I figure most who order this have likely already read these stories, so rather than review the writing, I'll review the book itself, since I bought it specifically because it's a leather bound edition. I love leather bound books, but have shied away from filling up my home library with them because of the cost.

As a Canadian, I usually do my online book shopping at Canadian retailers Amazon.ca and Chapters.Indigo.ca. But I read about the buy-one-get-one-for-$10 promotion Barnes & Noble recently had on their Leatherbound Classics collection in Entertainment Weekly and came here to check them out. While this is not an extensive collection of books, there is certainly a good variety of titles with broad appeal. I fully intend to pick up more of these and hope that Barnes & Noble continues to add to this library.

The book itself is beautiful. The cover art is lovely, and is perfectly suited to the stories within it. The map of Narnia on the endsheets adds to the experience of reading the book, as you can flip to it as you go through the stories and visualize where the characters are traveling to in their adventures. The paper the stories are printed on, while thin, feels substantial, and the gilded edges give the book an overall feeling of richness. The typeface is easy to read, and the illustrations at the top of each chapter are enjoyable. It feels like a sturdy, well-bound book. I am not hearing the glue cracking like I often do in low quality publications. The quality of this book is shocking for the low price, and I'd recommend the purchase of these editions to anyone who loves books.

All in all, a remarkable value for a beautiful book.

One of my all time favorite books!

I first encountered the Chronicles of Narnia in high school. From the first chapter I was enthralled, and greedily searched for all the other books in the series. They took me to another place, and filled both my mind and heart with wonder and a childlike joy.

As a college student, I shared them with my young cousins, reading them aloud each evening. When I grew up and became a teacher, I was thrilled to read them them aloud to my third grade students, and then later to my own children. And I still pick them up to read alone as a special treat.

Today I find myself judging other books by the standard they created in my mind. A truly good book is one that reminds me a little of the Chronicles of Narnia. And these books led me to discover all the other wonderful and varied works of C.S. Lewis.

Part of the magic of these books is that I always see something new, and have some new thought to ponder. C.S. Lewis was a genius of storytelling, and he knew how to plumb the deeper truths of Christian thought and how to distill essence of Christianity.

I recommend the Narnia books to children, teens, parents, or adults. They transcend age and will find a place in your hearts and minds forever. And this lovely, leather bound edition would be a beautiful addition to any library.

    Great Collection

I absolutely love The Chronicles of Narnia. Having all seven books together on a single hardback volume is amazing. However, I have noticed that not all of the original illustrations drawn by Pauline Baynes are included in this edition. There are several missing illustrations in each chapter of the books. For example, in The Magician's Nephew, the illustration of Diggory's uncle from the first chapter is missing. There are many other missing illustrations, I won't list them all.

    Classic

I LOVE this series! I've read them all about 7 times. I first read them when I was in elementary school, and then over and over again now that I'm an adult. One misses so much when one's a child. These books have truths for all ages. The cover of this volume is beautiful, and it has the original artwork that we've all grown up with and love.

    Wonderful work!

It is a tale of triumph, love, compassion. With a lot of religious significance and meaning to it. Lots of adventure, excitement--the story of good wins over evil personified, which is, in a sense, Christianity.

This book is absolutely stunning. All the magnificent books into one beautifully made leather bound book. The texture of the outside is marvelous, while when you open it up inside, the front and back cover show the map of Narnia. The pages themselves are lined with a gold color along the edge and all the books are arranged nicely. Another great thing about the book is that it has its own ribbon bookmark attached with it, so you can always place it where you leave off. This is a perfect hardcover book for any Narnian readers and fans.

    Wonderful

This collection is fantastic. It was recently given to me from my fiance as a birthday gift and I have not been able to put it down. I love how all the books are collected, or chronicled, into this one beautiful edition. I also love how the books are in chronological order, rather than written order, as I know that is a big controversy among Narnia fans. You cannot beat the price for the quality of this collection. Now I only wish that Barnes & Noble would publish an edition like this of L. Frank Baum's "Wizard of Oz" series.

This book needs to be reprinted! I love the Leatherbound Collectors editions by Barnes and Noble and I would love to include the Chronicles in my home library, but can't afford to do it when the book costs almost $1000.  I really expected better of Barnes and Noble. Please consider reprinting this edition of the book!

I have been building up a Barnes and Noble Leather bound Classic

I have been building up a Barnes and Noble Leather bound Classics collection and have been looking forward to the addition of the Chronicles of Narnia to my bookcase and was thoroughly disappointed to discover it was out of stock and would cost $400 to purchase a new one. I have loved this series since I was a little girl and my Daddy would read them to me and I hope Barnes and Noble will correct this mistake and continue to print them. As soon as this book is available I will be the first to purchase it.

EVERONE needs this bound volume in their library!

how does one rate a classic?
what makes the chronicles of narnia so enduring is the sincerity and sense of wonder with which cs lewis wrote them. they are bravely sentimental and satisfy what every kid dreams would happen to them as they engage in imaginative play. to step into a wardrobe only to find oneself in a wondrous world where you get to be a king or queen on a heroic quest. and what child has not stared longingly at some painting, picturing themselves in the scenery wishing only to get sucked into some fantastic escapade therein...
the characters are easy to fall in love with, particularly the honest hearted and faithful lucy and of course the awe inspiring great lion, aslan. while the christian overtones are obvious, one does not need to be one to appreciate the universal morals of faith, friendship, honesty and courage.
barnes and noble do an outstanding job, as usual, of binding these treasures together. the volume is beautiful to look at and comfortable to read. a must have for anyones bookshelf.

A Great Collection of Amazing Stories!

The Chronicles are the childrens grand equivalent to the Lord of the Rings for adults! This version in particular is exceptionaly grand because of the amazing binding. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy adventures, whether you are old or young, or even if you just like to collect them. These stories are exceptional, and not even that word is a good enough fit for this book! As famous as these stories are, i am thrilled to finally know that they have been beautifully bound to match these phenominal stories that it holds!
