Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen
Reared in poverty, Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen created more than 200 folk and fairy tales beloved by countless generations of children -- and adults.

Biography

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, to a poor family. He left home as a 14-year-old to seek his fortune at the theatre in Copenhagen. Andersen began writing plays and poetry before he left for Copenhagen, but it was not until 1835 that he published the first of the fairytales that would bring him international renown. Since then, his over 200 fairytales have enjoyed undiminished popularity, providing the basis for favorite American interpretations such as Disney's The Little Mermaid.

    A beautiful collection

Not only is this collection visually impressive it is impressive in its expansive collection of the fairy tales. I bought it for a class but I love it and think it looks beautiful on my book shelf. Keep in mind these are the original fairy tales and not the Disney ones so they can be a little brutal and rarely have happy endings. I read them as a child though and quite enjoyed them for their realistic view of life.

Many of the most memorable tales ever told

I read most of these tales when I was a child but I never realized who wrote them. Now, I'm reading them to my children and they are as pleased as I was. There are so many great tales in this one book that it will keep a child reading for a long time.

    A very beautiful book

This is a very beautiful looking book - which I bought to give as a present. The H.C. Andersen stories are world renown and classics - I live in Denmark, the home of H.C. Andersen and I wanted this book bound and embossed in English. It was everything I wanted and the receiver was moved to tears.

An Excellent Edition of the Hersholt Translation

This beautifully bound and presented edition of the Complete Fairy Tales and Stories of Hans Christian Andersen is based on the Jean Hersholt (1886-1956) translation, which many consider to be THE BEST in the English language. It is regarded by many as the standard English edition and is posted on-line on the Hans Christian Andersen Centre Website (University of Southern Denmark). The text is both accurate and very readable, and is geared to an American audience. Although this edition does not include illustrations, it is a readily available, reasonably priced, one-volume edition of an excellent version of the Great Dane's literary output...

    Hans Christian Andersen Fairytales

Hans Chrsitian Andersen, was an acquired taste since my youthful, and adventurous childhood. He is the type of author who is for all ages, he takes you into his world, and they way he see's life through metaphysical, and illustrative speech, without any depictions necessary. As you read, it leaves room for the explorer of this great read, to enjoy, to get lost, and uncover, the truth behind fairytales, his inspirations and life works.

The fairytales are rich, vivid, descriptive and languid in essence, and truly one that is captivating and worth the read.

Nobody should miss out on this book.

These are the stories we've all heard, and then some. I am grateful they've been collected into one nice-looking hardbound book.
There are some beautiful and touching things written in this book, and lessons we all need to remember.
I think everyone should have it to read to their children so these old classics never die out, and the kids get the real version first, instead of Disney's.

Grimm's Fairy Tales have been collected in the same way.

    Beautifully bound, a new heirloom

The stories are the stories. Nothing more to add there. Hans Christian Andersen has a genius for seeing the world with the honesty and optimism of a child, pointing out where there is good to be discovered, but at the same time, uncompromisingly proclaiming that the emperor has no clothes on. The book itself is gorgeous. Love the gold leaf and ribbon bookmark. I will pass this book on to my children.

    Must have

Andersen's most famous work has to be The Little Mermaid. This book is very nicely crafted and I have had no problems with it. This is a perfect companion to Grimm's Fairy Tales. I read both books as a child (at Grandma's of course) and was complely taken with Barnes and Noble's exuisite editions of these childhood favorites. The pages are gilded so prepared to be covered in gold dust on first read.

    Excelent Gift

My brother requested that I get him a hard cover copy of this for my niece. He was totally taken aback by the quality of the book. He was not expecting leather bound. This makes a wonderful gift or addition to a personal library.

Hans Christian Anderson - Leatherbound Edition

Here is a collection of all the fairy tales and stories we grew up with as a kid It is certainly the partner collection of the Grimm's Bros. Fairy Tales collection and both should be added to anyone's collection or personal library. The stories are complete and numerous and the leatherbound hardcover makes the book look and feel as though you received an authentic copy from years ago. This book of collected tales with provide hours of reading enjoyment whether you read the stories to yourself silently or outloud to any children. The pricing for this is more than reasonable and should not be passed up. It is a MUST for anyone's library of Classic Reading/Literature.
