Overview

When the King James translation of the Bible was first published in 1611, it was the first time that many people throughout the English-speaking world were able to read the Old and New Testaments in their native tongue. It proved so wildly popular, in fact, that it was the only book that many families owned. The majestic scope and poetry of the King James translation's language made an incomparable impact on Western religion, culture, and literature that still resonates today. This gorgeous gift edition also contains over two hundred beautiful, rarely collected full-page illustrations by Gustave Dore (1832-1883).

I would love to have given this Bible 5 stars. It is an absolutely gorgeous edition; heavy and substantive just as one would think a Bible should be. The illustrations remind me of my grandmother's old Bible. I normally use an NRSV for my regular study and reading. But this year I decided I would read through the KJV once again in order to recapture for myself the beauty of the language and the cadences rendered by the translators. But alas, no! Just this morning as I was reading one of the Psalms, I came across a verse missing an entire sentence! I thought surely not. The only reason I caught it was because the verse suddenly made no sense. Something didn't feel right. I looked it up and discovered the missing line. So disappointing because now I don't know if that is the only one, and it cheapens what is otherwise a great effort to publish a quality Bible that is also affordable. Perhaps there will be another edition correcting the errors of this one. I noted that it is printed in China. Perhaps therein lies the problem.

It is a wonderful bible and it is a great purchase for your collection. There is one flaw and that is the ink of the cover was coming off on my finger tips and getting on the pages. I thought i was bleeding and i discovered that it was ink, so i wiped down the cover with a rag and water. I got red finger prints on a few pages before i realized the situations. I really recommend wipe down the cover with a cloth.

Beautiful bible, wonderfully illustrated by Gustave Dore. Virtually no notes so its for reading. Time is quite readable, profusely illustrated which enhances the reading experience to no end. The only thing I didn't like about the book is the ribbon marker, it needs two and a little more care could have been put into the marker. That being said, its well worth the money and I'm enjoying it immensely. Highly recommend.

I wanted to buy a new bible, and when I saw that they came out with one in this great series, I thought I'd check it out. It's really gorgeous, and I'm thrilled with it. I noticed that the commentary has changed on the website about it - which is good, because there's nothing wrong with this book, I have already looked through it. Nothing wrong with the pages at all. Perfect.

I needed a new Bible cause the one i owned was worn and pages missing I bought this bible at Barns and Noble it was still in plastic when i opened it i was amazed with the illustration work makes reading the Bible much more entertaining the art work is awesome the feel and texture of this bible is amazing and looks good and sturdy at any book shelf. I can read the fist pages of Genesis without getting board no matter how many times you read the Bible. This Bible brings originality feel and design as in the old times compared to more modern bibles i wish they make more bibles like this more sturdy and long lasting as things were made in the past i believe King James Version is the best bible i ever own and it is beautifully written never changes and stood the test of time.

Spurred by the History Channel's Bible series and this being the most holy week in the Catholic Church I purschased this. The Bible is beautiful, leather bound, terrific illustrations by Gustave Dore, easy to read text, and ribbon marker. Terrific addition to anyone's library, be it classical or otherwise. I would defintiely recommend to anyone looking for a Bible or has any interest in either the Old or New Testaments

Worth $18 bucks? yes it is The plusses + Bonded Leather looks nice and real +Nice gilded Edges +Good readable font +Proper capitalized as in the original 1611 version, IE: Gen 1:2 says "Spirit of God" instead of mistakenly "spirit of God" which unfortunately allot of new Bibles do. The negatives: -Bonded Leather, no real leather. -Has an introduction written into it. -One of the copies had glue residue on the edges of the pages. -One of the copies had damage to the corner of the cover

I did a quick run through on text and the text is 1611... The book is elegant to say the least. Illustrations are interesting beautiful, it is also easy to read. Of course the word of God is not about a pretty book but I must say, this is a pretty book. This book has no misleading commentaries and no irrelevant chain links which is a good thing. The books a worthy buy.
