Editorial Reviews

Magazine Editors Parents
Sandra Boynton has a knack for creating baby books with bounce. Her Barnyard Dance! Is a true romp of a board book, with cartoon farm animals that are wacky enough to make you laugh out loud, and rhymes clever enough to sustain those nearly infinite rereadings: "Stand with the donkey / Slide with the sheep / Scramble with the little chicks - cheep cheep cheep!" Now, here's a woman who really knows how to use an active verb. --Parents, June 1994
Children's Literature
Funny, flocking, festivities are depicted in this bright and sturdy board book. Everybody sings along as the animals do-si-do in the barnyard. Winner of the 1994 Gold Medal from the National Parenting Publications Award.

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton has been a bestselling Workman author for 25 years. She's written the New York Times bestseller Chocolate: The Consuming Passion, the national (and New York Times) bestselling musical for the whole family, Philadelphia Chickens, the phenomenally successful Boynton on Board series (led by Barnyard Dance!), and the one-of-a-kind Grunt, the sublime collection of Pigoroian chant. All told, her books have over 15.3 million copies in print, a number that will already be out-of-date when you read this. She lives with her family in western Connecticut.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

Real hit with my granddaughter & daycare kids.

This book is more like a song. It's fun For the kids. Fun for story time. We have all Sandra Boynton's books. The illustrations are great. It says something about a book when a child looks up after you finish reading and says "Please read it one more time". Even when it is the 3rd or 4th time.

    Super Cute

This book is so much fun. My 14 month old daughter loves books like this where she can imitate. Plus I have to admit, it's great fun for me as well. She's just so darn cute dancing around with her thirteen year old brother (he will do ANYTHING for baby sis) acting like the barnyard animals.

I also recommend The Tickle Monster. Both books will have your kids giggling from beginning to end.

    Absolutely Love This Book!!

My mother-in-law had this book at her house and my five-month old son and I enjoyed it so much during our visit that we purchased a copy for our home. My nephew also has this book and it is one of his favorites too. I highly recommend this book because we absolutely love it!

    Granddaughter loves this!

This is a great book in rhyme with wonderful Boynton characters. My two year old granddaughter actually acts to the dance and can repeat a good portion of it by heart. We have so much fun with this book!

    Soooooo cute!!!! You need this!!!

The illustrations are so cute, and you can almost see the farm animals come to life and dance to the beat of the caller's voice :)
Happy square dance beat and lively drawings. The only thing that would've made this better is if they'd added a little music (even just a violin) in the background. Still 5 well-deserved stars!

    Love it

This is one of our favorite Sandra Boynton books. We have the paper book and the ebook on my Nook. I wish it had moving pictures or some interactive features.

The colors and narration are so much fun! It is read like a sqare-dancing song. My daughter really likes the animals dancing. I love the "read to me" option, especially when reading the same book multiple times in one day. Very enjoyable!
