Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jolene Ivey
All the animals in the barn come down with a case of the flu, courtesy of a sick bee. Their rhyming, spirited 'Gobble gobble quack, quack neigh, neigh, neigh' to an 'Oink, squeal! Baa, snort! Moo, A-h-h-h-h-choo!' The farmer and his crew serve the sick beasts and the bee bowlfuls of soup and nurse them back to health until they can once again sing their barnyard song from dawn until dusk. The illustrations are filled with warm colors and funny expressions that will charm the youngest reader.
School Library Journal
PreSIn prose reminiscent of the "Old MacDonald" song, Greene develops an amusing story. The farm animals catch the flu and their usual "Buzz, buzz/Mew, mew/Cock-a-doodle-doo/Oink, oink/Baa, baa/Moo, moo, moo" become "Buzz, `CHOO!/Mew, SNIFF!/Cock-a-SQUAWK!-le-doo/Oink, SQUEAL!/Baa, SNORT!/Moo, A-H-H-H-H-CHOO!" All ends happily when Farmer cooks up and feeds them batches of healthy soup until their voices return and the familiar, noisy farm life continues. Only the rooster's crow remains altered, a nice touch at the conclusion of the story. Bender's full-page illustrations are rendered in animator's paint on acetate. Bold, funny, and slightly askew, they feature silly animals with exaggerated teeth, eyes, and shapes. They provide humorous details, such as a box of tissues and a hot-water bottle in the barn. Very young children will respond to the rhythm and rhyme and enjoy identifying the animals. Older preschoolers will giggle at the altered sounds and be reassured by the messages of love and caring. A storytime winner.Lee Bock, Brown County Public Libraries, Green Bay, WI

PreS--A bad case of flu turns the farm animals' harmonies into a cacophony of wheezes and sneezes. A playful read-aloud with a square-dance cadence and deeply saturated, warm-and-fuzzy colors. (Sept.)

    My Toddler's Favorite

This is a fun and fanciful book that we read over and over and over. My 3 year old knows it by heart, and loves to shout the chorus 'Buzz buzz mew mew cockadoodle doo!' Adults will enjoy the rhymes and illustrations just as much.
