Barnes & Noble - Seth Kaufman
Now that's good fiddlin'! Picture the perky young sparrows of B*Witched getting together with Michael Flatley's Riverdance corps for a Hibernian hoedown -- albeit with a more than ample dose of world beat merriment -- and you'll get a sense of the Barrage lying in wait on this spirited debut. This sprightly, 11-member bunch is a world folk fiddle outfit whose multiculti aspirations are downright wholesome. Indeed, while every romp here somehow bears the stamp of their Celtic roots, Indian, Caribbean, and swing music are just some of the other sounds to make their way onto the stage here. "Mahatma" whips up an entrancing whirlwind of string harmonies over an exotic vocal drone. "Sing, Sing, Sing" is a swingin' hothouse riot. "Calypso Jam" blissfully distills Harry Belafonte's calling-card rhythms with tin whistles, while "The Ukraine" is an out-and-out Russian klezmer party. "Until We Meet Again" is a simple benediction of the sweetest kind. Bow those strings and bring on the Barrage!
All Music Guide - Paula Edelstein
Barrage is an exciting soundtrack featuring 15 songs from the rousing stage show and theatrical troupe of the same name. The CD documents the original music of Dean Marshall, who has taken the many traditions and styles played on the violin and fiddle and combined them with the contemporary and world beats of percussion, rhythm, movement, and energy. The troupe's presentation is filled with the influences of calypso, swing, country, jazz, Kleczmer, and classical styles that literally "barrage" one's musical senses. Marshall composed ten of the songs and arranged all of the songs with the exception of "Until We Meet Again." It is the first single from the soundtrack and was co-arranged with Joe Segreti. The musical selections include excellent renditions of Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Calypso Jam," "Spazz Jazz," and the folk tune "Old Joe Clark." The diversity of the Barrage soundtrack matches the stunning visual and aural fusion of music, dance, theater, and song derived from cultures around the globe. It is an inspiration to anyone interested in musicals featuring the ageless and powerful versatility of the violin out front of a multi-instrumental, foot-stomping ensemble. Flawless!

Barrage is ''wicked''! (in a good way)

I have been a Barrage fan for almost a year. I first saw them summer of 2001, and fell in love with their music and the live show. I bought the CD, and the music video, and was not dissappointed in the least. I highly recommend Barrage. If you ever get a chance to see them live, DON'T pass it up. It will be an unforgettable experience.

    Truly Awesome

I say this group on Public Television before the CD was released and was truly impressed by the diversity of their music. They seem comfortable playing Irish step music, swing or Indian music as evidenced by the piece Mahatma. I couldn't wait for this release.

    Barrage Rocks!

Recently, some of my friends and I were at Epcot (Walt Disney World) when we heard some amazing music. We ran to see what it was and, as violinists, were astounded to discover that it was violinists playing and dancing around on stage. We sat, mesmerized, mesmerized through the concert and then rushed to buy the cd. Barrage has been in my cd player since October and I am still enjoying it immensely. If you like fiddling, rock, celtic or classical music, this is the cd for you!

    Barrage will blow you away

<< Barrage is a stunning visual and aural fusion of music, dance, theatre and song centered around an ageless and powerful instrument - the violin. Barrage takes the many traditions and styles played on the violin and combine them with the contemporary and world beat elements of percussion, rhythm, movement and energy to create a brand new form of musical performance. This original music elevates the violin to new and magical heights and features a wide range of musical influences including: Calypso, Swing, Country, Celtic, East Indian, Jazz, Kleczmer, Classical and Pop. January 9th saw the release of Barrage on CD with the VHS and DVD to hit stores on February 6th. As a stage show, Barrage is a stunning spectacle: a huge outpouring of activity, lit with rock 'n' roll panache and presented with theatrical precision. The eleven-member band featuring fiddles, guitars, flutes, percussion, tambourines and a xylophone has captivated audiences in Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. In addition to a busy schedule Barrage has been a feature show several times at EPCOT at Walt Disney World (where they are billed as the ''hottest fiddle group''). Barrage has already gained worldwide media attention, appearing for millions of viewers on several international TV networks including PBS (USA), BBC (UK), CBC (Canada), Denmark National TV and ZDF (Germany).

I can't believe how good this is

I have had the pleasure of hearing this music both recorded and ''seeing the music'' live. I can't think of any other way to describe it. The fun the group is having has a way of coming through when you listen to Sing, Sing, Sing and Old Joe Clark...and the beauty of Mountain Spring is almost enough to make me throw away rock collection (though I ain't gonna...but there's definitely room for Barrage)! This is one of those albums that only comes around every few years...one that you don't know how to live without once you've heard it.

A Wonderful Barrage on the Senses.

WOW! Barrage is a stunning aural fusion of musical styles that cover a wide spectrum, from Celtic and folk to big band swing and East Indian to Calypso and Jazz to Kleczmer, Classical and Pop. These eleven players (mostly fiddle players mixed with guitars, percussion, flutes and a xylophone) unleash dazzling energetic playing on songs such as ¿Chopsticken,¿ ¿The Ukraine,¿ and the barn-burning ¿Old Joe Clark¿ but they wisely alter the mood throughout on slower tracks like ¿Mountain Spring,¿ the majestic swirling Middle Eastern ¿Mahatma¿ and the breathless vocal ¿Until We Meet Again¿. Barrage has about half vocal cuts and half instrumental excursions. If you like foot stomping, hand clapping, good time music with International tastes and textures, then Barrage your senses with this amazing CD. Just listening to it makes me imagine choreographed fiddlers happily dancing and swinging. I can¿t wait to see the show and I¿ll definitely buy the DVD when it comes out.
